*31 Days of Christmas* A Gingerbread Romance

Thanksgiving is over and the countdown to Christmas has officially begun (at least in my house). I don't limit myself to just reading cheesy Christmas romances during this time of year. Oh no. I also find myself binge watching Christmas movies on Netflix and the Hallmark Channel. And I thought, why not incorporate that into my blog as well. So I give you the 31 Days of Christmas (which will be much easier to accomplish with movies than books like I've tried to do in past years).

Next up is A Gingerbread Romance.

Watched on: Hallmark
Duration: 2 hours (with commercials)
Originally aired on: 16 December 2018
Directed by: Richard Gabai
Starring: Tia Mowry-Hardrict, Duane Henry, and Jordana Lajoie
Please see IMDb for full cast and crew info.

Synopsis

With Christmas just weeks away, the architecture firm Taylor works for enters her in a contest in which the teams will design and build life-sized gingerbread houses. After the contest, Taylor will likely be getting a promotion to a position in another city. The firm teams her up with Isabelle, a renowned French pastry chef with whom Taylor instantly locks horns. When Isabelle backs out, Taylor stumbles into a local bakery and meets Adam, a baker and single dad. In an act of desperation, Taylor convinces Adam to partner with her for the contest, arguing that winning would give the bakery and his designs much-needed exposure. For years Taylor has been resistant to call anywhere 'home' for fear it will only be temporary. But the time she spends with Adam and his daughter in their cozy home, decorating for the holidays and exploring the town at Christmas, fills her with a longing for a place to call home.

Review

Taylor has spent a large portion of her life traveling, so she's rarely home for Christmas. That means that as an adult, while she's not a grinch exactly, she doesn't really get into the holiday spirit, like ever. So it's a bit of a surprise when her boss tells her that she's going to be leading the team for a gingerbread house building competition. After completely misreading the situation with Annabelle, a world-renowned pastry chef, she's left scrambling for a baker to work with on the competition.

Taylor has trouble handing off control of things, even when someone else has more expertise than she does. This leads to a recurring disagreement between her and Adam about how the gingerbread should be baked. To me, the solution seems obvious, and I have to take Adam's side. He's the baking expert after all.

The acting in this was somewhat questionable. For example, Taylor and Adam buy supplies to build a life-size gingerbread house, and she picks up a five gallon bucket of honey like it's nothing. I know it's nit-picky, but she should have struggled with it a little at least. I understand using fake props to avoid strain on the actors, but they are supposed to be actors so...

This movie includes a giant gingerbread house competition, Christmas market shopping, tree decorating, and ice skating.

I would definitely leave this movie on in the background while I was working, and probably wouldn't change the channel if it came on while I was watching, but I don't think I'd actively seek it out for a viewing in the future.
