They came to earth—Pestilence, War, Famine, Death—four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to earth, and they came to end us all. When Pestilence comes for Sara Burn’s town, one thing is certain: everyone she knows and loves is marked for death. Unless, of course, the angelic-looking horseman is stopped, which is exactly what Sara has in mind when she shoots the unholy beast off his steed. Too bad no one told her Pestilence can’t be killed. Now the horseman, very much alive and very pissed off, has taken her prisoner, and he’s eager to make her suffer. Only, the longer she’s with him, the more uncertain she is about his true feelings towards her … and hers towards him. And now, well, Sara might still be able to save the world, but in order to do so, she'll have to sacrifice her heart in the process.
This was the January pick for my smutty book club. This is my honest review.
This story felt like it wasn't supposed to be smutty. I was fully on board for the end of the world stuff, and the growing relationship between Sara and Pestilence as a result of their forced proximity, but the sex felt very out of place, and like it was added almost as an afterthought. And that kind of detracted from the story for me.
Pestilence kind of reminded me of Jack in Supernatural as far as personality goes. Innocent but powerful, and very naive to the actual world around them on Earth. I got a little annoyed by him at times, especially later on when Sara was asking him why he's spreading disease around the world and he just said it was his purpose.
I also struggled to feel invested in this story. Once it was clear that Pestilence couldn't be killed, Sara's presence and survival kind of felt pointless and I didn't really care if she lived or died.
Overall I give Pestilence 3.5863 out of 5 stars. - Katie
