*Book Blogger Hop* What Sci-fi/Fantasy Novel Should Be Literary Canon

We are on to a new week for the Book Blogger Hop hosted by the lovely folks over at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. This weeks questions is:

What fantasy or Sci-fi should be part of the literary canon? (submitted by Snapdragon @ Snapdragon Alcove)

Science fiction and fantasy are two of my favorite genres, so I honestly feel like there are a lot of possibilities that should be considered straight up classic literature. I imagine we'll see a lot of people saying The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien, and although I've never read it, I'm sure they're right. The novels seem to hold up to the test of time pretty well and have maintained popularity through the ages. But I haven't read them because both times I've tried to read The Hobbit I've found it incredibly tedious, and I'd like some of our literary canon novels to be not tedious. So for that reason, I'm going to say The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. It has Star Trek vibe space travel and Spaceballs level humor. It's a great blend to appeal to a broad range of readers and it's a fairly easy read.

What book would you add to literary canon? If you're stopping by from the linkup, please be sure to drop a link to your post below so I can be sure to return the visit when I have time. - Katie

  1. Douglas Adams should definitely be in the list. I love the Hitchhiker books. My husband's been trying to get me to read his Dirk Gently book and one of these days I will!

  2. I finally managed to read The Hobbit a couple of years ago after starting it many times. I got the book when I was 14ish and I'm now 34 so 😂

    Have a great weekend!

    1. So you're saying there's still hope for me. I think I was about 14 the first time I tried to read it...and then somewhere in my 20s the second time. I'm 41 now though, so maybe I've grown into it. LOL. Thanks for stopping by. - Katie

  3. Ahh, I am grasping a better sense of this topic after seeing everyone else's post! Lol. I guess at the time of writing I was relating "canon" to the stories themselves or something like that? I don't know really. I write these posts far in advance, so who knows where my train of thought was but my sort of comparison/add-on to the story canon from books to tv to books again was where my train of thought went! Lol.

    Thanks for visiting my BBH!
