*Review* Slippery, Spicy, Tingly: A Kimchi Mystery by Yangsook Choi

Keo loves kimchi! And he loves Halmoni, his grandmother!

But when Halmoni unexpectedly comes to visit and digs a big hole in the backyard, he's not sure what's going on. Could Halmoni be planning to bury a secret treasure?! Yangsook Choi, author and illustrator of the beloved picture book The Name Jar, serves up a tasty new story that's bursting with heart, humor, mystery, and . . . cabbage!

I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.

This was a story about a kid whose grandmother shows up at their house to make kimchi for their family. While she's there, she doesn't spend as much time with the kid as they think she ought to if she really cares about them, so when she leaves, they think she doesn't really care about them. But once the kimchi is ready for eating, she comes back and it becomes clear to the kid that making the kimchi, which is a process, is a way that she shows she cares.

I like to feed the people I care about, so I understood the motivation there, but at the same time, I feel like the grandmother probably could have involved the grandkid in the process of making the kimchi, like teach them how to do it so they can do it in the future and then they wouldn't have felt like she didn't care about them in the first place. That being said, I'd probably be okay reading this book a few times at least. The illustrations were colorful and fun.

Overall I give Slippery, Spicy, Tingly: A Kimchi Mystery 3.7942 out of 5 stars. - Katie
