This week’s theme is favorite heroines...but I don't really keep track of those things so I thought instead I should focus on the female characters that I loved when I was a kid because I weirdly have a better memory for those than for women I've read about recently. So here we go.
Laura Ingalls Wilder from Little House on the Prairie
Caddie Woodlawn from Caddie Woodlawn
Jo March from Little Women
Elnora Comstock from A Girl of the Limberlost
Beverly Cleary from A Girl from Yamhill
Matilda from Matilda
Misty from Misty of Chincoteague
Annemarie from Number the Stars
I realize that's only 8, not ten, but when I went to Google to try and jog my memory about other books I may have read as a kid, it gave me suggestions for middle grade historical fiction books set in the 1990s, and at that point I was done with the internet for the day, because fuck you Google.
Have you read any of the books that made my list? Who are some of your favorite heroines? If you're stopping by from the linkup, please be sure to drop a link to your post below so I can stop by and check out your list as well. - Katie
It's funny, I grew up watching Little House on the Prairie but never really enjoyed reading the books.

And I think I've seen parts of a couple episodes of the show, but never got into watching it because it seemed so different from the books I loved. Thanks for stopping by. - Katie
DeleteI loved so many of these characters, too. Did you know that Beth March was very heavily based on Alcott’s sister who also died young? Apparently, the two were so similar that much of what we know about her sister is based on what Beth said and did in that book. I thought that was really sweet.

I've long assumed that Little Women borders on autobiography, so that doesn't surprise me about Beth. Jo is obviously Alcott. Thanks for stopping by. - Katie
DeleteThis post brought back so many memories! I loved Laura when I was growing up.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I could bring back some memories for people, after being told that I'm apparently historical. LOL. Thanks for stopping by. - Katie
DeleteI've read most of these! Matilda was one of my favorite characters when I was a kid.
ReplyDeleteI read my copy of Matilda so many times it was literally falling apart, although I got close to doing the same thing to A Girl from Yamhill. Thanks for stopping by. - Katie
DeleteI really loved Number the Stars, Little House on the Prairie, and Matilda as a kid too!

Number the Stars was one of the books that inspired my fascination with WWII era fiction. Thanks for stopping by. - Katie
DeleteMatilda was on my list this week too, I think the characters we read about as kids have a way of sticking with us! I've been asked a lot if my name is Jo because of Little Women which a) my parents could have had no idea that I was going to be a reader when they named me and b) is a little awkward because I only got halfway through Little Women before getting bored and giving up on it!

I mean, if you were named Jo after Jo March, it would probably be because your mother loved her as a character, but I feel like naming our children after favorite characters is very much a millennial thing so...LOL. Thanks for stopping by. - Katie
DeleteGreat list! I'm the same way with my memory. I've read five of these books, although I actually didn't find some of them until I was an adult.
ReplyDeleteHappy TTT!
As I'm going through other's lists this week, I'm finding books that others read as kids that I didn't find until I was an adult too, so it's fine. Thanks for stopping by. - Katie
DeleteMatilda is on my list today also.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to be on quite a few of them, because she's just such a great character! Thanks for stopping by. - Katie
DeleteSo many childhood classics!
