Do you use other sources for ARCs besides NetGalley? (submitted by Bonnie @ Bonnie Reads and Writes)
The simple answer to that question is, kind of. I am a big fan of entering the giveaways on Goodreads, and the vast majority of those are for ARC copies of books. And I win a not insignificant number of giveaways. But because those books are prizes, I feel much less obligated to read them in a timely manner (not that I feel super obligated to read the books from Netgalley in as timely a manner as I should, as my giant Netgalley hole shows), so I don't really count it as a source of ARCs. I enter the giveaways just hoping to win something, and sometimes I get really lucky and win a book I REALLY wanna read REALLY soon. (I still usually don't, because that urge has passed by the time the book arrives, but it still gives me some good dopamine for a bit).
So while I technically do use other sources for ARCs, Netgalley is the only one where I really make the effort to read and review prior to, or soon after release day.

I never win those Goodreads giveaways. Maybe I'm not entering enough of them.

DeleteOh, I hardly ever enter Goodreads giveaways, I try to only enter books that I've shelved, and those don't really happen often, so I don't really win. But oh, I know about the NetGalley black hole, I've been a member since 2010, so while I've been working on my reviews, it takes 30 reviews or so to get a percentage. I'm so close to that 80%! ReplyDeleteI have not been a member of Netgalley that long, but it does take like 5 book reviews to gain a single percentage point for me, which is where the kids books are so helpful, except they're new books on my shelf, making it take even more for the points...super vicious cycle here. DeleteI love NetGalley and their ever changing selection of book choices. I get approved for a pretty good number of them as well. I have way too many on my shelf. I get emails offering me books from publishers and authors but I don't know when I'd read them. I feel bad for saying no so sometimes I just ignore them.
ReplyDeleteThe amount of books I get approved for is sickening, considering my current feedback percentage of 35 (it was at like 14 when I jumped back into book blogging, so I've clawed my way up a bunch in about four months thanks to reviewing a fuckton of children's books). DeleteI have never won a Goodreads giveaway, but then again I enter very few of them. I don't want to get overwhelmed by having too many books of my own, so I mostly visit the library when I want to read a book. Have a great week! :-)
