Review: This Art is for the Birds by Susan Bednanski

Can four determined pigeons get their friend's artwork into a museum? Never underestimate the power of persistence and pigeonuity.

Alex the Crow is an artist, and his pigeon friends think his work belongs in the museum. But how will they get it there? With persistence and pigeonuity, the four friends hatch a plan to help their friend achieve his dream. The New York art world will never be the same!

With gorgeous traditional watercolor illustrations, debut author-illustrator Susan Bednarski crafts a story celebrating the joy of art. The innocent enthusiasm of the characters adds charm as they creatively problem solve and believe that anything is possible. Readers can spot famous artworks and landmarks as the pigeons pursue their bird-brained schemes to share Alex's art with the world. This picture book is both a great story time read aloud and also a useful tool for teaching growth mindset in a classroom or library setting.

I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.

I felt like this story was told more through the pictures than the words. There was a narrative to follow, with the pigeons chiming in, sometimes with inaccurate information that was quickly corrected by another pigeon. The language was pretty basic so a budding reader could probably work through this book. You could almost read this with a group of young readers, assigning each child a pigeon to voice.

The illustrations are where the story really shone though. They complemented the events being narrated perfectly, pulling the reader along. Seeing the birds congregating and carrying out all the actions described really brought the story to life.

I would definitely read this story more than once because it had me giggling, one of the pigeons in particular was largely responsible for that. Overall I give it 4.4 out of 5 stars. - Katie

If you ask author-illustrator Susan Bednarski about some of her favorite things, NYC and museums top the list. And pigeons are the best. Birds. Ever! Just like those silly pigeons, she is happiest in little nooks of the city…with a sketchbook, a coffee, and some chocolate.
