Review: Polly's Special Day by Yulinda Blake Cook

Genre: Children's
Published: June 20, 2022

The story of a lifelong memory given to a little girl by her father who grants her the gift of her dreams, which is... time!

What do #GIRL DAD'S DO? They show their daughters that quality time given to them doesn't tick away. Quality time is recorded and locked in the heart to cherish and retrieved through the memory anytime they need it!

I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.

This is a book about a daddy daughter day, in which the girl spends all day eating cake, which somehow shows her how special she is to her father. I feel like this was a huge missed opportunity because dads seem to really struggle to connect with their daughters in meaningful ways. They take sons fishing and to sports games and bond over these things they both enjoy. But figuring out what to do with daughters can be more difficult.  And this book settled on gorging on cake together. If it weren't for the illustrations, I wouldn't have even realized this was supposed to be a daddy daughter day and not the girl's birthday.

The story rhymes, kind of. There are several places where the flow and rhymes work out well, and several where they don't work out at all. It gets very clunky, and there were a couple instances where there just wasn't a rhyme at all. In the places where there were rhymes, a fair number of them were things being included out of left field just to make a rhyme work. I think this book would've been better of without the goal of rhyming.

The illustrations were nice. They were solid, bright colors with fun little touches, and like I mentioned before, gave me the only clues that this story was about a daddy daughter day.

Because of the issues with the flow and rhyming, I would not want to read this book more than a couple times. Overall I give it 2.1 out of 5 stars. - Katie
