*Review* Bold and Brave by K.A. Cummins

Sometimes courage is loud like an elephant, and sometimes it’s quiet like a llama.

Lily, a young autistic girl with a vivid imagination, wants to sing the solo in the school’s choir show. However, the thought of standing at center stage turns her heart a gloomy grey. School is overwhelming enough when no one is watching. Now all eyes will be on her. Will she overcome her fear and be bold and brave?

Bold and Brave is a whimsical picture book showcasing the bond of family while visually drawing readers into Lily’s experience and inspiring them to be bold and brave. It’s aimed at readers aged 4 to 8.

I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.

This is a story about a young autistic girl who has a big solo in the school concert, and that makes her super nervous and overwhelmed. And because it's a school concert, she can't wear her favorite polka dot shirt that makes her feel brave. So her parents buy her some polka dot socks to wear instead. And when she is up on stage for her big solo, she sees her parents wearing matching polka dot socks on their hands in a show of support. That helped her to feel brave to sing her big solo.

I like the representation of differently abled people in children's literature. I feel like it isn't used often enough to be comparable to the representation that exists in life, but it's also a great way for average kids to see and empathize with kids who are a bit different from them, and that's important. So I love this book for that aspect alone. The illustrations in the book did a great job of showing the changes in the young girls mood as well, and how the polka dots just helped her to feel so much better. Overall I give Bold and Brave 4.8496 out of 5 stars. - Katie
