Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Joood - Hooligan of Platypire reviews bossed me into doing this, so I guess this is a thing I do now.
This weeks theme is longest books I've ever read. I have been known to read some real big books in my time, and since I've been reading for so long (before Goodreads was even really a thing), I've had to comb some Goodreads lists to try and make sure I got the ten longest books I've read for this list. And since page length can vary depending on the edition read, I'm using the Kindle page numbers from Amazon whenever possible (because I believe those numbers should reflect actual book size best in relation to one another).
So here we go.
So here we go.
A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
819 pages
11/22/63 by Stephen King
866 pages
The Tommyknockers by Stephen King
993 pages
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
1057 pages
Under the Dome by Stephen King
1092 pages
It by Stephen King
1169 pages
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
1188 pages
A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin
1216 pages
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
1298 pages
The Stand by Stephen King
1348 pages
There you have it, from "smallest" to largest, the top ten longest books I've ever read. And because only three of them contain fewer than 1,000 pages, with these ten books, I've read over 10,000 pages, which is just crazy. I also think it's interesting that my list is half Stephen King novels.
So what are the longest books you've ever read? - Katie

I can't believe how long The Stand is! And yeah Martin's stuff too...
ReplyDeleteYeah, I don't remember it seeming that long at the time I read it (but I also wasn't trying to complete a Goodreads reading challenge goal of over 100 books in a year at the time either, so I wasn't too concerned with book length). I also just really love King's books, so length never concerns me for him.

I wanted to read that JFK book by Stephen King. The Stand made my list too. Loved that book.

I really enjoyed 11/22/63. It's less creepy horror than most of King's books, but the alternate reality was really interesting.

I've seen War and Peace a couple of times this week and each time I am impressed. Congrats. You read something that I will probably never have the attention span for! Ever. lol. This is a great list! Game of Thrones made it on mine too.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I read it my sophomore year of high school because I was going through a phase where I wanted to read all of the long classics (it took me two months to finish it). If I'd gone to a school big enough to offer AP classes, I might not have read it though because I like to think I would have taken AP classes had they been available to me.

You and I would have gotten along in HS, I'm sure of it! :D
DeleteGoodness me, you have read some LONG books!
ReplyDeleteI've never read a book over 1,000 pages, they're just so intimidating.

I used to get joy out of reading the longest books I could find (high school was rather boring to me, and I was quite snobbish about my reading at the time).

I have only done Game of Thrones on your list this week. I really wanted to enjoy it but I just found it to be just way too dense for me.
ReplyDeleteMy TTT https://wp.me/p3ftwe-YR
It is a very dense book, but I feel like I had an easier time following the show initially because I'd read the book (I retain information better from reading than from seeing).

I've never read any books over 1000 pages, so go you! It can of makes me want to have that as a goal. I haven't read any of these, but I'd be most interested in reading one of the classics. Did you like reading Gone with the Wind. I don't know if I'd read it or not. I prefer reading books with HEA.
ReplyDeleteI did enjoy Gone with the Wind and would absolutely re-read it at some point (although I rarely end up re-reading anything even when I want to). I felt like the ending was satisfying in spite of the lack of an HEA.

Nice list! I haven't read any of these, but my fellow reviewer (who made our list this week) has read Game of Thrones. I'd like to read the series as some point. Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteIt's a series I definitely recommend if you enjoy epic fantasy. Thanks for stopping by. - Katie
DeleteThe Stand should have been on my list this week, but I forgot how long it was.
ReplyDeleteThere are some authors that write long books! King, George RR Martin, Cassandra Clare, SJM... been seeing them on a lot of lists this week.
I'm going to pretend you forgot how long The Stand was because you enjoyed it so much that it didn't seem so long (I had to use Goodreads lists to even remember that I'd read half of these books because they were before I started using Goodreads to keep track of my books).

I'm so impressed with all the bloggers who have read Gone With the Wind. The book is so big!
ReplyDeleteIt didn't seem big when I was reading it...I mean, it did because it was a hardcover copy and heavy, but I felt like I flew through it.

We have a lot of the same books on our lists. I didn’t know that The Tommyknockers was so long. Either I read a shorter edition, or it should have been on my list.
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I did use the Kindle page numbers for all of these because I think those are based on file size which is more impacted by word count than font size. So the edition of The Tommyknockers that you read probably had a pretty small font (that's pretty standard for King mass market paperbacks) or it was a hardback book (in which case it would take fewer pages even with a slightly larger font).
DeleteI noticed HP & The Order of the Phoenix making a lot of lists, and the paperback version (according to Amazon) is 896 pages, whereas the Kindle version is only 815, and the hardcover is 870. This is why I figured it made the most sense to just use the Kindle page count for every book since I couldn't tell you exactly which edition of any of the books I read in the first place. It just seemed like the best way to get a good comparison of book length between the books.

I didn't realize that KING had so many long books. I do want to read 11/23/63 even though it is so long. Thanks for visiting my blog.
ReplyDeleteMost of his books are at least 500 pages (except some of his early stuff like Carrie). I don't think the man really knows how to write a short book. LOL.

Great list! Most of these books are on my TBR (if I ever get to them...). I listened to "It" on audiobook and it took me the whole summer! But I really liked it.
ReplyDeleteThe Stand made my list, too and I would have included 11/22/63, but I've talked about that book so many times I decided to go with some others. I love Game of Thrones on TV, but have not read it. I think I'd like to sometime. Fun list!
ReplyDeleteI've never read any Stephen King novels, but I think 11/22/63 will be the one I do read. The rest are too scary for me.
ReplyDeleteOhh those Stephen King books are INTENSE. I do want to read something from him eventually, but I totally admit the size is terrifying me more than the, um, actual horror content.😂But someday!! And Game of Thrones was amazing but intense and soooo long.😂
ReplyDeleteGone with the Wind? War and Peace!? So impressive! The closest I'll get to these stories is their respective film and TV adaptations. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the Finding Wonderland visit, Katie - my apologies it took me this long to visit here.
