*Book Blogger Hop* 5 October 2018

We are on to a new week for the Book Blogger Hop hosted by the lovely folks over at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. This weeks questions is:
It's getting close to Halloween. If you HAD to read one of these two genres, which would you prefer -- urban fantasy, or horror, and why? (submitted by Maria @ A Night's Dream of Books)
Well that's easy. I'd pick horror any day of the week because I've never really gotten into urban fantasy and horror has always been one of my favorite genres. I grew up reading Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Goosebumps, and then moved on to Stephen King and any other remotely scary story I could find. And while I've probably read and enjoyed urban fantasies, I don't actively seek them out. I do actively seek out horror novels. So if you've got any recommendations for me, drop them in the comments below.

What about you? Would you rather urban fantasy or horror? - Katie

  1. I prefer horror as well! Have you read anything by Josh Malerman, Joe Hill, or Kevin J Kennedy? Those are my top favorites!

  2. (You already stopped by me!)

All these posts kind of make me regret choosing UF. I enjoy both, though.

  3. My answer to this week's question: Horror!

I grew up reading Goosebumps, Fear Street, and Point Horror books.

  4. Well, there's room in "the bookworm universe" for all kinds of reading tastes. :)

I thoroughly dislike the horror genre! I don't like feeling fear or helplessness in the face of evil, and both elements are very much present in the horror genre.

Ironically, there have been two exceptions for me.

The first is an omnibus edition of three previously published books, and is titled "The Forbidden Game". Written by L.J. Smith (of "The Vampire Diaries" fame), this is a tale that actually combines horror, urban fantasy, and paranormal romance. It was the PNR that kept me going, but there were VERY scary parts! This book is also in the YA genre, by the way. I think that helped, too.

The second book is "Dread Nation", by Justina Ireland. This book is really more of what I would call "horror lite". Lol. It, too, is in the YA genre. This one is more of a satire, a scathing condemnation of racism, with a very strong, feminist, female MC. Yes, there are zombies in it, but they take a back seat to the other elements in it that I've just mentioned, which I greatly enjoyed!

So these are the two exceptions. Not another horror book for me!! As for UF, I MUCH prefer it! And I want to read more UF that doesn't also include PNR. There are some GREAT series out there, such as the Kate Daniels series, that I REALLY want to get to!

Thanks for sharing, as well for commenting on my own BBH post!! Hope you're having a nice Saturday!! <3 :)
