We are on to a new week for the Book Blogger Hop hosted by the lovely folks over at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. This weeks questions is:
What about you? Have you ever bought a more expensive edition of a book because you liked the cover better? - Katie

Have you ever bought a more expensive edition of a book, when a cheaper edition was available, just because you preferred the cover of the more expensive one? (submitted by Maria @ A Night's Dream of Books)This is a bit of a trick question, I think. The short answer is no, basically. I pretty much always buy the cheapest version of a book I can find (I'm a big fan of mass market paperbacks). But I do have the set of Harry Potter books with the spines that make Hogwarts in my possession simply because I liked that cover design, and it was definitely not the cheapest version of the Harry Potter series that I could have bought. So I guess really the answer is yes, I have done this. Once. I'm not likely to ever do it again though (unless there are more new fun covers for Harry Potter because I have an obsession).

I have not, but I do like to see pretty spines. :)
ReplyDeleteI am happy with what I have.
Thanks for your reply.
I am looking forward to answers today...I think this is a good question and will generate a lot of interesting, thoughtful discussion and comments.

I'm still waiting for a book that I love SO much that I need to either 1) drop a ton of money on a fancy edition or 2) just collect every edition possible (versions, languages, etc.). Unfortunately that has yet to happen to me. :(
ReplyDeleteMy one book cover splurge was a Christmas present (from my husband, but I placed the actual order for it). It's Harry Potter though, so I HAD to have it :) - Katie
DeleteFor many years, I have not had the room to "collect books" so I bought ebooks which are normally always the cheaper edition and book covers don't necessarily matter. Now I have room and there is one series I am trying to go back and collect, but I only want the hardback copies if possible. It's Sue Grafton's alphabet series. None of them are incredible life changing books, but I grew up in Lompoc, which is just outside of Santa Barbara and her fictional city, Santa Teresa, is based on SB.
ReplyDeleteI've got a couple of the books from the alphabet series...letters W and Y I think...They're not the hardback version though. - Katie
DeleteI refuse to admit to agreeing with you.
ReplyDeleteThat's alright. This refusal is enough for me. - Katie
DeleteI love Mass Markets! However... I am guilty of doing this MULTIPLE times.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing wrong with that. - Katie
DeleteHello, my name is Isatta and I have a book buying problem. I have very few vices and so the one main one gets FED! I don't often buy expensive books in general, but even my discounted books... I wil buy the more expensive one if I like it better.
ReplyDeleteThere is no shame in buying a more expensive book if it has a more appealing cover. If I find more than one copy of a book I want at my thrift store, I get a bit picky about which one I buy too :) - Katie
DeleteNo, I read on my kindle
ReplyDeleteWell that makes it easy to not worry about covers! :) - Katie
DeleteNope. As much as I'd love a pretty, matching set of Harry Potter books, I probably never will. As it is, my first 6 are a paperback box set, and the 7th is first edition hardback. I also own them as a digital boxset on my Kindle. I really can't justify owning any more copies! (Aside from the illustrated ones!)
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, I don't think I've ever done this because usually the books I buy have only one edition at the time. And I don't re-buy books. (Unless it's a digital copy when I have a physical copy and vice versa.)
There is ALWAYS justification for buying more copies of Harry Potter. But when we get married, you won't have to worry about that anymore :) LOL. - Katie
DeleteI also mostly buy the cheapest version of the books, no matter how the cover looks.

It's really the way to go when you really like to read and need to get the most bang for your book buying bucks. - Katie
DeleteFor something special it's worth it, but in general I don't.
ReplyDeleteI agree, hence my Hogwarts spine collection of Harry Potter :) - Katie
DeleteI don't think I have ever done this before but that's probably due to the fact that I rarely buy paperbacks unless they are being sold at our local library.
ReplyDeleteAnd when you're buying from the local library, you get whatever edition they have. I get it, considering I do most of my physical book buying at the thrift store. :) - Katie
DeleteI haven't, but some of my favorite books are getting leather bound and it's KILLING ME. I'm not spending 100$ on it.
ReplyDeleteI've seen some like faux leather type covers for some of the classics like Pride and Prejudice at our PX...I want to buy them so bad, but I can't justify the cost, and they're only like $15 or $20. - Katie
Deleteabsolutely not, i'm a poor college student!
ReplyDeleteWell, that's valid. I didn't splurge on expensive copies of books when I could keep from it when I was in college either. - Katie
DeleteThat HP collection is so stunning!!
ReplyDeleteRight! It was hard to resist. I did at least have a coupon code from Amazon when I ordered it, so I saved a little bit of money on it. - Katie
