You may or may not know this already, but Joood - Hooligan of Platypire Reviews is notoriously bad at writing reviews after she finishes reading books. I'm serious, her to be reviewed list is almost as long as my Platypire Read-A-Thon list, and that thing is monstrous. So after much cajoling on Joood's part, I have decided to help her out and once a week I'm going to write one of her reviews for her because I'm a good friend like that, and there is no way this could possibly go wrong. I will be writing the reviews as if I actually am Joood.
This week, I've selected You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) by Felicia Day.
Genre: Memoir
Published: August 11, 2015
Pages: 260
Synopsis
From online entertainment mogul, actress, and “queen of the geeks” Felicia Day, a funny, quirky, and inspiring memoir about her unusual upbringing, her rise to Internet-stardom, and embracing her individuality to find success in Hollywood.
The Internet isn’t all cat videos. There’s also Felicia Day—violinist, filmmaker, Internet entrepreneur, compulsive gamer, hoagie specialist, and former lonely homeschooled girl who overcame her isolated childhood to become the ruler of a new world... or at least semi-influential in the world of Internet Geeks and Goodreads book clubs.
After growing up in the south where she was "home-schooled for hippie reasons", Felicia moved to Hollywood to pursue her dream of becoming an actress and was immediately typecast as a crazy cat-lady secretary. But Felicia’s misadventures in Hollywood led her to produce her own web series, own her own production company, and become an Internet star.
Felicia’s short-ish life and her rags-to-riches rise to Internet fame launched her career as one of the most influential creators in new media. Now, Felicia’s strange world is filled with thoughts on creativity, video games, and a dash of mild feminist activism—just like her memoir.
Hilarious and inspirational, You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) is proof that everyone should embrace what makes them different and be brave enough to share it with the world, because anything is possible now—even for a digital misfit.

A while back I was searching for a world domination handbook for reasons and that's when I found You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost). On the surface this doesn't seem like a world domination handbook, but if Felicia Day can rise from her homeschool beginnings to dominate the internet, then I can rise from mine to dominate the entire world!
Me meeting Fefe at a book thingy. |
Like Fefe (we've met so we're basically BFF's now), I was homeschooled. My parents didn't have a choice in the matter though. I had a bit of a temper in my youth and after I put Bobby Sanderson in the hospital for calling me a stink brain, I got expelled. Apparently the school had a thirteen strike policy. But homeschool was great. I even taught myself how to speed read in my spare time, which led to me starting a book review blog, and that inspired my desire for world domination. It was clearly meant to be.
I had initially hoped that Fefe would be part of my world domination plans, but after she didn't laugh at my "I'm Skeksi and I know it" shirt, I had to abandon that dream in search of someone better suited to the role of my right hand. I thought I had found what I was looking for in Platypire Bob. Things were really good between us until she took out that restraining order on me. I mean, sure, after she started acting like my mom I sent her ONE picture of me in just a diaper as a joke, but it was a one time thing. I have no idea where she got the other pictures from. I definitely didn't send them to her from burner phones. And she says that I sent her a pacifier and a paddle in the mail, but I wouldn't do that. I use my pacifiers. I don't know what I did to make Bob turn on me, but once again I find myself in need of a right hand man (or woman. I'm an equal opportunity overlord). I'm currently accepting applications.
Anyway, I give this book 6 out of 5 platypires because it totally validated my world domination dreams and gave me hope for the future. - Joood - Hooligan
