Synopsis

It is the morning hours in the small town of Hammond and,  as the town wakes up it finds that there is something spreading.   Something that is not seen until it is too late because by then, you are already infected.   At that point,  they are already... Hatched.

Review

I listened to the audiobook version of this book. If you've read any of my previous audiobook reviews, you know the voices, particularly the opposite gender voices, are very important to me in an audiobook. Hatched failed to deliver on that score. The opposite gendered voices came off very much as caricatures to me. Additionally, the cast for this book was so large that some of the voices sounded the same, so it wasn't always easy to tell who was speaking.

I hate spiders with a fiery, burning passion, so a horror novel using spiders has a much greater chance of scaring me than the average horror novel does (Arachnophobia is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, and one of the few that actually scared me). Hatched did not scare me. The beginning sort of creeped me out, but then it just became rather blasé.

I didn't really care about any of the characters and I would be find with this entire town being blown off the map to eradicate the threat, and I'm typically not okay with those measures when they're suggested for zombie books and movies (although spiders do scare me more than zombies do, so there's that.)

The book wasn't bad, but it didn't suck me in or make me want to keep listening to find out what happened next. I had no problem hitting pause and putting the phone away when I'd finished whatever task I'd been doing while listening.

Overall I give Hatched 2.5 out of 5 stars. - Katie
