30 Days of Christmas - Day 2 - The Christmas Elf by Arnie Lightning

Today I choose a children's book for my review selection. Since I have a three year old and a five year old myself, and I imagine many of you have your own little ones, or possibly grand little ones, it makes sense. Also, this book was a free download when I got it, and is still currently free at the time of this posting, although the price is likely to change at some point. Anyway, on with the show.

This book is about Tinsel the elf, who is very much like Buddy the Elf from the movie Elf. "All of Santa's elves love Christmas, but there is no elf who loves Christmas quite as much as Tinsel does. Tinsel the elf has lived with Santa since Santa came to the North Pole, years and years ago. He is always filled to the brim with holiday cheer, no matter what time of year it is." See what I mean. Because Tinsel is so full of Christmas cheer, Santa puts him in charge of bringing Christmas cheer to children in need by assigning him to a different child each year. And every year he gets the job done.

This was a cute little collection of stories that I will definitely be sharing with my children this holiday season. Each story teaches a different lesson about ways to find your own holiday cheer, even when the holidays are not going to be the same as usual. I would say that these stories would be particularly meaningful for military children since it can be hard to maintain the same traditions through moves, but I also think that military children are more accustomed to nothing ever staying the same. Because my son was two when we moved to Germany (and I was pregnant with my daughter), my children don't even really know what it's like to spend the holidays with extended family. They certainly don't expect it like many of the children in these stories do. But even the most resilient of children could sometimes use a little extra holiday cheer, right?

An added bonus to these stories is a collection of Christmas jokes at the end. You should be forewarned that most of the jokes are real groaners, but they're designed to appeal to children, so I guess that is to be expected.

Overall I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars because it perfectly fits the bill of stories to read to young children, there were no typographical errors that I noticed (you know, because I'm anal retentive about that), and they were really cute. I would definitely recommend this book to parents and grandparents of small children this holiday season. - Katie
