Review
I have been desperate to read WildCard, since I saw Missy Johnson was going to be releasing a book about a world class Tennis playing BadBoy. In books authors generally write about Football players, swimmers and "ball" players. I loved having one of my favourite authors write a book incorporating a sport I love, a sexy BadBoy and a good love story all I one book.
I thought Wild Card was going to be a full length novel. When I got the book and found out that the books was going to be in 3 short stories I was slightly disappointed. Luckily once I read book 1, I fell in love with all the characters and the story left me wanting more, I was glad to find out that there wasn't going to be big waiting times in between the next books. Book 2 is released 22nd September and book 3 is being released on 6th October. (These dates could change by the author at any time though)I think Missy did a good job at making sure the releases dates were close together so people wouldn't be put off buying books with Hugh waiting times in between.
Ryder Stevens is the BadBoy of Tennis. He's at the very too if his game, which he is very arrogant about. He may be at the too of his games, but he doesn't take his Tennis seriously anymore. Off the court he's always out drinking, partying, sleeping around and doing anything bad he can think off., even before championship final games.
" I can do what I want, I'm Ryder Stevens"
"In my world everything was about me"
Ryder doesn't care about rules, his mantra are "Rules are meant to be broken" He pushes and pushes and doesn't listen to anybody. So the night before he's big match Ryder does what Ryder does and had women over and wanted some female attention. Everything was going well until he slips and ends up badly injured. Ryder's not just hurt, he's completely embarrassed too. He realises very quickly that Tennis career is going to be over for quite awhile and he has no idea what to do now.
"Not being at your best, when your best is what you're known for, is pretty shit"
Ryder decides to open some of his fan mail as he's bored, when he comes across a letter from Jake a very sick child, who tells Ryder some home truths.
"You mess everything up, I act older than you and I'm only 7. I can't do what my friends do because I'm sick. You don't know his lucky you are"
After reading Jakes whole letter, Ryder wants to talk to him. He tried to call him but Jakes mum, (Scarlett )won't let him talk to Jake. This doesn't stop Ryder from calling Jakes mum over and over to try and get her to talk to Jake. Slowly over the phone calls Scarlett and Ryder start to build up a friendship. Ryder then decides he wants to help Jake see a specialist and help anyway he can because he's mum can't afford to pay for specialists.
Spending time with Jake and his Scarlett, Ryder starts to wonder about his career and if there's any point to it any more.
"There has to come a point when you think Why do I keep playing this, when I no I'm always going to win? Where's the a incentive? Here's the drive?
Ryder is the perfect male character. He's cocky, confident, sexy, arrogant, sweet, charming and totally gorgeous.
The story was very short but fasted paced which pretty much just gave you the back ground of the characters and a little insight to there lives. I can't wait to read the next book as I'm desperate to find out more about Ryder, Scarlett and Jake.
Another great book by a Missy Johnson. It's defiantly got the potential to be her best book/s yet.
If you've never read any of Missys books then I highly recommend you one click them now.

About Missy Johnson
Missy lives in a small town in Central Victoria with her husband, and her confused pets (a dog who think she’s a cat, a cat who thinks he’s a dog…you get the picture).
When she’s not writing, she can usually be found looking for something to read.
