Top Ten Tuesday - Books with Pets on the Cover - 11/17/2020

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Joood - Hooligan of Platypire reviews bossed me into doing this, so I guess this is a thing I do now.

This week’s theme is Character's I'd Name a Pet After. But I don't really find myself wanting to name pets after specific characters in books. The closest we've come, is that our actual cats are Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Leia, and our dog is Captain Phasma, but we adopted the cats because of the names they'd already been given, and when we got the dog, she obviously needed a name to go with the theme. So instead, I'm going to feature ten books that have pets on the cover. Here we go.

Walk Me Home by Liza Kendall

Bad Bella by Ali Standish

Gun Island by Amitav Ghosh

Good Boy: My Life in Seven Dogs by Jennifer Finney Boylan

Modern Family by Marc Freeman

The Christmas Keeper by Jean McKinlay

The Devil in the Saddle by Julia London

Al Dente's Inferno by Stephanie Cole

This list was a little bit harder to compile just by looking at my bookshelves than last weeks list about song titles, although some of that is because I had to look at the covers of all my books to find ones with pets. And I don't care what you say about that snake, snakes can absolutely be pets.

  1. I don't think I can read a book with a snake on the cover. Eek! I had a lot of fun this week creating my list because I've had a lot of pets named for literary charactersMy TTT List

    1. I found one book with a spider on the cover (which could also be considered a pet, but that's a great big NOPE from me, so I left it off the list).

  2. An interesting take on the topic. Made me think of Zane Gray's 30,000 on the hoof. What a cover that would make. https://pmprescott.blogspot.com/2020/11/ttt-111720.html

    1. Right! It's pretty clear what the book is going to be about.

  4. I love that cover for Bad Bella. That's just the perfect innocent face on a dog haha. Also I don't think I've read many books with animals on the cover... I can only think of the Hunger Games books.

    1. I haven't actually read any of these books yet, they're on some of my yet-to-read shelves. I also can't think of books off the top of my head that I've read with animals on the cover, but I'm sure there are some.

  5. No cats???!!! How is that even possible! Just about every second cozy mystery cover features a cat. I believe it should be a pre-requisite requirement for those covers.

That's Elza speaking, little madam who believes the world should revolve around her. Good Boy's cover is done so nicely and Bad Bella seems like fun!

    1. This is just the first ten books I found with pets on the cover (and the vast majority of my books are in boxes in the basement waiting for me to have the time and energy to get them put up on the bookshelves down there (I only have two bookcases by my desk). I knew if I was just searching books on Amazon I'd find a lot of cozies with cats on the cover (which I was prepared to do as a last resort), but I was really hoping to feature a more diverse list of books than strictly cozies.

  8. I took a similar approach with this week's theme. As fun as it sounded, I've never really named a pet after literary characters. So I love your twist! I've always liked that cover for Bad Bella—too cute.
