Synopsis
Madeline and Daphne were once as close as sisters—until a secret tore them apart. Now it might take them to their graves.
They knew his name, the man who tried to brutally attack twelve-year-old Madeline in her grandmother's hotel. They thought they knew his fate. He wouldn't be bothering them anymore...ever. Still their lives would never be the same.
Madeline has returned to Washington after her grandmother's mysterious death. And at the old, abandoned hotel—a place she never wanted to see again—a dying man’s last words convey a warning: the secrets she and Daphne believed buried forever have been discovered.
Now, after almost two decades, Madeline and Daphne will be reunited in friendship and in fear. Unable to trust the local police, Madeline summons Jack Rayner, the hotel chain’s new security expert. Despite the secrets and mysteries that surround him, Jack is the only one she trusts...and wants.
Jack is no good at relationships but he does possess a specific skill set that includes a profoundly intimate understanding of warped and dangerous minds. With the assistance of Jack's brother, Abe, a high-tech magician, the four of them will form an uneasy alliance against a killer who will stop at nothing to hide the truth....

Review
I received a copy of this book through Penguin's First to Read program in exchange for an honest review.
For me this book read a bit like a crime drama from tv, which it should being suspense and all. But it's those shows where you KNOW the first suspect is never the person who committed the crime because they catch them ten minutes into the episode. Basically, it was really obvious to me that they were barking up the wrong suspect tree for most of the book. That being said, there were also twists that I never saw coming.
The romance aspect of the story felt very manufactured to me and largely unnecessary. This was exacerbated by the fact that there were two separate couples thrown together. One I could probably have accepted grudgingly. Two was just too much.
Overall I give this book 4 out of 5 stars because it did surprise me and kept me guessing, but the romances really just detracted from the mystery and suspense. - Katie

Jayne Ann Krentz has always been a favorite of mine. I've gotta have a little romance in my novels, even if it seems a bit contrived.
ReplyDeleteI could have accepted it as natural if it had just been one of the two couples, probably. Adding the second one just shot me over the line of "Oh please." - Katie
