Review:
Hunter Donovan is lost. A 40 something year old publisher, a job that he hates but was forced into by his father who still owns part of Donovan Books, and his company is barely making ends meet. Then at a book conference he bumps into an Erotica writer who has dubbed herself Smut Slut. Seeing the crowd gathered for her signing gives him an idea to save Donovan Books, but will his old man allow him to make such a depraved change to the company?
When I saw the title and cover for this book, I was expecting a 50 Shades of Grey-esque book, with group sex scenes. That's not what this book is at all. For me, this was a book about a man who finally grows up and realizes that there is more to life than one night stands and more to women than long legs and blonde hair. He has his new department head, Cary Anderson, to thank for that.
I loved the chemistry between Hunter and Cary, both in and out of the office. I could feel the uncertainty between them and that invisible pull that we're all supposed to feel towards our partner. And then there's Cary's secret. You just had to know that Cary was going to have a secret.
Because Hunter is a publisher and used to be an aspiring writer and Cary is an editor, there is talk of a few different books within The Bondage Club, and at the end I was left feeling like I had just read one of them, which I feel is just awesome. There have been times in the past when I've read books that talk about other books, and I'm left disappointed because I want to read the books discussed, and they don't exist. That was thankfully not the case with this book.
With a title like The Bondage Club, you know there are going to be at least a few sex scenes. Most of these were hilariously awkward and they help to bring to light a little known problem sweeping the nation since 50 Shades of Grey made it's epic debut. They felt very realistic, even if the awkwardness diminished the sizzle factor.
Overall I give this book 5 out of 5 stars for being genuinely engaging, making me laugh a lot, and having very well developed characters. I would definitely recommend this book to any romance fan, especially ones that are looking for a good laugh. - Katie
