Synopsis

Suffering from a dark past, he lives his life with passion but no purpose. She planned everything…except him.

Billie Price has always had a plan for her life. On the surface, it all appears on track. But there has always been something missing. Even though she has a purpose, there is no passion to fuel it. Then she meets a mysterious stranger with a dark past. Except Evan Wright is all kinds of wrong—the tattoo-clad, guitar-strumming, Harley-riding modern day drifter is definitely not the right man for her. Yet she finds herself drawn to him and The Lost Souls’ Club—the eclectic bar where he works. As all her carefully strung plans unravel, Evan is there to comfort her. As their attraction grows, Billie can’t resist the temptation, even though Evan will leave in the fall. At least they have all summer together, not to mention the man knows how to narrate the perfect sex scene for the book she’s writing. But as she crashes into Evan’s world, Billie has to ask herself—can passion prevail when there is no purpose?

Reader Advisory: Warning—this book contains one raunchy tattoo-clad musician who can rock his tongue as well as a guitar!

I cleared my throat. “My turn - what’s the craziest sexual thing you’ve ever done?”
He chuckled softly, probably recounting the event. “I let a girl drive my bike and then I made her come.”
“That’s not crazy.”
“While she was driving it.”
My mouth gaped. “That’s so dangerous.”
He shrugged. “We had our helmets on.”

Excerpt

I first laid eyes on him in a cemetery and if that wasn’t an ominous sign, I don’t know what is. My stalking, leering, checking out—whatever it was—disturbed me. But not enough to stop searching for him among the granite markers rising from the earth. I usually found him. Either we were on the same schedule or he visited so often it was unavoidable.

He wore a gray hoodie, dark jeans with rips at the knees and what looked like a vintage bomber jacket. His hair, thick and disheveled, covered his neck and curled at the ends, its color somewhere between sand and sun. Broad shoulders and a confident stride made watching him walk dangerously enticing. He paused for a brief moment. My skin prickled as his head turned my way with a stare that lingered a second too long to be coincidental. I dropped my head, rearranging the baby pink roses on Lorraine’s plot, sure they resembled the color on my cheeks. I gripped the stems, ashamed to be caught by Tall, Blond and Brooding, and at such an inappropriate place.

“Well, Lorraine, I got another rejection today.” I fished the crumpled letter from my jacket. I came to see her every time I got a letter—a habit I desperately wanted to break. “This one is personalized, at least, but it still tore my heart. ‘Dear Miss Price, While your work is enjoyable, I didn’t connect to your characters. I felt an overall lack of passion in your writing. As I’m sure you know, passion is the measure of a good romance’.”

I smoothed the paper with my hand before folding it into a neat square. “Then there are some other things about this being a subjective industry and all. How could she say I’m not passionate? And worse, is it true? A writer who isn’t passionate is like the cobbler with no shoes, or the dentist with no teeth.” I stared at the etched letters chiseled into the steely granite headstone. “I once read you wrote eighty stories that were rejected before your first break. I don’t know how you did it.”

The roar of a motorcycle interrupted the solitude. I allowed myself another glance toward the gravel road where he was speeding off into the horizon.

A few moments later, I stood, wiping the dirt from my jeans then taking the sufficiently decayed peach-colored flowers from last week’s visit.

“Until next time, Lorraine.”

I headed down the path myself as clouds curtained the sky, drowning out the sun with shades of bleak.

I made it to the Third Street stop, preparing myself for the three-hour bus ride that would take only an hour by automobile. I didn’t mind the public transportation, though. People carved out time as if it was made of boundless clay, filling every second until no white space remained. The time to think had become a peculiar pastime made for odd people like myself. That was what I did during the long commutes to visit Lorraine. The first drops of rain flicked against me, mocking my good intentions.

It wasn’t so bad. I turned my face toward it and closed my eyes in appreciation of the light mist. Unfortunately, the sky opened and doused me in retaliation.

Shit! Here I was at one of the only bus stops that didn’t have a covered seating area. I held my knapsack above my head as I surveyed my surroundings. My salvation lay in the shop across the street that boasted pictures of whimsical cups on its door and checkered curtains. The aroma of whipped cream, strong coffee and fresh baked pastries beckoned me with each step. If I wasn’t running toward it, I might have floated like a loony cartoon character.

I wrung out my wet tresses, twisting my blonde hair into a tight bun as I waited in line. I blotted myself with napkins in a lame attempt to dry off while I waited for my order. The tables overflowed with people who, like me, sought shelter. Only one vacant seat remained.

Where he was.

His hair was damp, not drenched like mine. A helmet sat on the seat across from him. He wore wire-rimmed glasses and was flipping pages of a newspaper. For a moment I lost myself in him, until someone bumped my shoulder, nearly spilling my drink.

The large-mouthed cup complete with saucer chattered as I walked around the tight space.

“May I sit here?” I asked timidly.

He tilted his head and smiled, pushing the vacant chair out with his foot. Observing him at close range was worse than viewing him from afar. His eyes had the same luminosity as melting chocolate. A noticeable white scar on the chiseled planes of his jaw made him look dangerous. The boyish smile that elicited the slightest dimple disarmed me. But it was the natural tan he sported that invoked my curiosity. It wasn’t orange enough to be fake, but the weather in Chicago hadn’t reached tanning levels yet.

I set down my tray and picked up his helmet. It was heavier than I’d imagined. He took it from me.

“Thank you. The other seats are taken,” I explained. Although a mere glance could have confirmed my statement, he just nodded.

He snapped his fingers and pointed to me. “Graveyard girl,” he said, a trace of a southern twang coloring his words.

I tilted my head, trying to keep my smile from reaching ridiculous heights. “Is that what you call me?”

“In my head, but now that I say it out loud, it sounds creepy.”

“Yeah, it does.” I chuckled, holding out my hand. “Billie Price.”

He leaned over slightly. The scent of soap and peppermint was even more pleasing than the coffee. His smile held the lure of temptation—the kind of expression that made ordinary girls feel exceptional.

“Billie?”

“I know it’s a strange name for a girl.”

“I like it. It sounds southern. Pleased to meet you, Billie Price. The name’s Evan Wright.” He tightened his grip on my hand. I always thought my hands were awkwardly large, but in that moment, my right hand looked tiny, almost dainty, clasped against his powerful one. He flipped my wrist, kissing the underside of it, causing a shiver that travelled down my spine straight to my toes.

“That doesn’t happen to me every day.” My voice sounded unnaturally squeaky. Did they pump helium through the vents?

“Maybe it should.”

About the Author

I am a hopeless romantic in a hopelessly pragmatic world. I have a full time life and two busy teenagers, but in the dark of night, I sit by the warm glow of my computer monitor, reading or writing, usually with some tasty Italian…the food that is!

I started imagining stories in my head at a very young age. In fact, I got so good at it that friends asked me to create plots featuring them as the heroine and the object of their affection as the hero. You've heard of fan fiction... this was friend fiction.

I hope you enjoy my stories and always find The Happily Ever After in every endeavor.

Excerpt

She stared at the ink on her arm as she brushed her teeth. It was strange, not just that Gabriel had a fountain pen, but that he’d used it on her arm as well. She felt the rough tip of his fountain pen scratching her skin as he wrote, but now she couldn’t find a single scratch on her arm. Strange. Karen looked closely at the ink marks. It wasn’t quite black ink, it seemed a little blue, and a little grey in the light. There was something else odd about the ink… it seemed to have a faint glow to it. Did it glow like this before? She couldn’t remember, but then again it was a full moon tonight. Everything had a certain glow to it under a full moon. Still, she reached for the light switch and turned the light off. The full moon shone in through the bathroom window, illuminating the writing on Karen’s arm with a blue glow.
"Must have had something in the ink." The glow grew in intensity. It seemed to bleed into her skin. What the fuck? She blinked a few times, trying to clear her mind and her eyesight. The blue glow regrouped and formed lines, traveling up her arm. Karen ran her fingernails up her arm, scratching, panicking a little. She hadn’t seen anything like this before. She had to be imagining it; her eyes had to be playing tricks on her. Suddenly the glow faded, and it was just Karen’s arm and the ink again.
She took a few deep breaths and tried to calm herself. "I must be dead tired. That totally did not just happen. It’s just ink."

*Challenge Review* A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams

Genre: Play
Published: 1947
Pages: 142
Ages: 16+

Synopsis

The Pulitzer Prize and Drama Critics Circle Award winning play—reissued with an introduction by Arthur Miller (Death of a Salesman and The Crucible), and Williams’ essay “The World I Live In.”

It is a very short list of 20th-century American plays that continue to have the same power and impact as when they first appeared—57 years after its Broadway premiere, Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire is one of those plays. The story famously recounts how the faded and promiscuous Blanche DuBois is pushed over the edge by her sexy and brutal brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski. Streetcar launched the careers of Marlon Brando, Jessica Tandy, Kim Hunter, and Karl Malden, and solidified the position of Tennessee Williams as one of the most important young playwrights of his generation, as well as that of Elia Kazan as the greatest American stage director of the ’40s and ’50s.

Review

I don't get what the big deal is with this play or why it became so popular, but I was born a few decades after it was written, and don't know a lot about the time in which it is set. It's also a little harder for me to visualize than a book, since descriptions are minimal to allow some leeway with the set and the actors. I did enjoy the story, but not enough to rave about it.

Although I had difficulty visualizing the setting and characters at first, by the end of the play, the images were a little more solid in my mind (it helped that my copy of the play contains images from the original Broadway run.) I also eventually became more invested in the story after I figured Blanche out a bit.

Overall I give it 3 out of 5 stars. If you have a passion for plays (you've probably already read it) or the classics, you'll probably enjoy this play. - Katie

About the Author

Tennessee Williams (1911-1983), one of the 20th century's most superb writers, was also one of its most successful and prolific. His classic works include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Glass Menagerie, Summer and Smoke, Camino Real, Sweet Bird of Youth, Night of the Iguana, Orpheus Descending, and The Rose Tattoo.

Challenge Scorecard

I used A Streetcar Named Desire to fulfill the 'Play' category on the Popsugar reading challenge, because it's a play, it fits.

Other categories it would fulfill include
A book that became a movie
A Pulitzer Prize-Winning book (it won for Drama)
A book I could finish in a day (it took me less than 24 hours)
A book set somewhere I've always wanted to visit (New Orleans)

*Review* Mr. Fox Meets New Friends by Gary Beheler

Genre: Children's
Published: May 1, 2015
Pages: 22
Ages: All

Synopsis

Mr. Fox Meets New Friends was written for children of all ages. It tells the story of three unlikely friends. A search for food ends up with a gift of friendship instead of just a full stomach. It demonstrates how friends can come in any shape, form, or size when you are least expecting it.

Review

I won a copy of this book through the Goodreads First Reads giveaway program in the hopes that I would leave an honest review.

This book uses simple language and word repetition which makes it a great book for a beginning reader. The large font size is icing on that cake.

The illustrations are very simple, but if you have a young reader they will be less distracting than complex illustrations would be.

The one area that bothered me was the punctuation and lack of line breaks for new speakers during dialogue. This may not seem important to most people, but I strongly believe children should be shown the correct way of writing from the beginning.

Overall I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. - Katie

*Mail Call* August 10-14

You may or may not have noticed that I didn't make a mail call blog post last week...If you did notice, it's because last week I didn't get a single book in the mail (it was awful!) My mail room made up for that this week by delivering seven books and one fancy notebook to me this week (and because of my location and circumstances, sometimes I might have mail at the mail room that I can't get because other people don't pick up their packages regularly, so the staff can't open up new connexes.) So without further ado, heres the rundown of this weeks book mail.

Murder on the Eiffel Tower by Claude Izner

The Murder on the Eiffel Tower that I got, is actually just a really cool notebook that came with one of my other books, probably as a promotional piece, and it's done it's job because I'm actually really interested in reading the actual book now too.

Synopsis

The brand-new, shiny Eiffel Tower is the pride and glory of the 1889 World Exposition. But one sunny afternoon, as visitors are crowding the viewing platforms, a woman collapses and dies on this great Paris landmark. Can a bee sting really be the cause of death? Or is there a more sinister explanation? Enter young bookseller Victor Legris. Present on the tower at the time of the incident, and appalled by the media coverage of the occurrence, he is determined to find out what actually happened. In this dazzling evocation of late nineteenth-century Paris, we follow Victor as his investigation takes him all over the city and he suspects an ever-changing list of possible perpetrators. Could mysterious Kenji Mori, his surrogate father and business partner at the bookstore Legris operates, be involved in the crime? Why are beautiful Russian illustrator Tasha and her colleagues at the newly launched sensationalist newspaper Passepartout always up-to-date in their reporting? And what will Legris do when the deaths begin to multiply and he is caught in a race against time?
Murder on the Eiffel Tower is painstakingly researched, an effortless evocation of the glorious City of Light, and an exciting opening to a promising series of eight books featuring Victor Legris.

Synopsis
A seemingly idyllic Midwestern college town turns out to be a nexus of horror in this spellbinding novel—emotionally and psychologically complex, at once chilling and deliciously dark—from a thrilling new voice in fiction.

When Emily Ryan is found drowned in the family pool, pumped full of barbiturates and alcohol, a series of events with cataclysmic consequences ensues. Emily’s lover, a college professor, finds himself responsible for her twin daughters, whose piercing stares fill him with the guilt and anguish he so desperately tries to hide from his wife. A low-level criminal named The Gonk takes over the cottage of a reclusive elderly artist, complete with graveyard and moonshine still, and devises plans for both. His young apprentice, haunted by inner demons, seeks retribution for the professor’s wicked deeds. The town itself, buzzing into decadent life after sundown, traps its inhabitants in patterns of inexplicable behavior all the while drawing them toward a night in which the horror will reach its disturbing and inevitable conclusion.

Well to be honest I never seen myself as an author, but when I was going through Chemo I needed something to keep me sane. So I was like hell let’s give this a try.
