Olivia was supposed to buy eggs at the store, but instead she came home with a circus; despite food fights and a lack of potty training, Olivia is determined to keep her animals--even after Mr. Victor changes his mind and wants them back.
I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.
This was a fun, whimsical story about a young girl named Olivia who is tempted while at the market, much like in Jack and the Beanstalk, into buying something other than what she's supposed to be buying. What does she buy, you ask? A whole circus, like you do. But she puts a lot of effort into training the circus animals to be productive at home, overcoming all of the obstacles that were in her way.
I like how this book is kind of a refresh of a classic tale from my childhood. Making things a little more modern isn't always a bad thing, because it interests new people in the story, and this provides a way that you can tell your children a similar story without as much personal repetition. The illustrations were also fun and whimsical (and honestly probably a large part of the reason I felt the story itself should be described that way). Overall I give Not My Circus 3.8593 out of 5 stars. - Katie
Janet Sumner Johnson has been writing for as long as she can remember. She bakes a mean cinnamon twist and eats way more cookies than are good for her, which explains her running habit. Though her full-time occupation as Mom takes most of her time, she sneaks in writing at night when her inner funny bone is fully unleashed. Janet lives in Utah with her husband and three kids.
Patrick Corrigan was born on a crisp, cold December day in a small, cloudy town in Cheshire, England. With a passion for precision as a child, he grew up patiently drawing and designing arts and crafts. This took him to study ceramics at University, train as an art teacher and eventually become an Art Director at a busy design studio where he worked for nearly 10 years. Whilst there he honed his skills working on well over 500 educational and picture books for children as well as animations and branding. Patrick lives and works in the UK using Photoshop, Illustrator and sometimes even real art equipment to create his work. He specialises in illustrating picture books for younger readers and draws best when listening to podcasts or dusty old records and drinking gallons of green tea.
