#SneakPeekSunday - The Ones Who Got Away by Roni Loren

Title: The Ones Who Got Away
Author: Roni Loren
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Published: January 2, 2018
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Pages: 384

A fresh new contemporary romance from New York Times and USA Today bestseller Roni Loren that will rock your world.

Twelve years ago, tragedy struck the senior class of Long Acre High School. Only a small number of students survived, a group the media dubbed as The Ones Who Got Away.

Now, web designer Liv Arias, along with the rest of the survivors, have returned to the small Texas town to tell their stories for a documentary. Which means Liv seeing former star-athlete and old flame Finn Dorsey. A lot happened between them that night and Liv is ready to end their decade-long riff and move on. But when her attempt at closure turns into a steamy kiss, moving on proves much more difficult than either of them thought...

Liv's words cut off as Finn got closer. The man approaching was nothing like the boy she'd known. The bulky football muscles had streamlined into a harder, leaner package. The smooth face was now dusted with scruff, and the look in his deep green eyes held no trace of boyish innocence. A thousand things were in those eyes. A thousand things welled up in Liv.

Sneak Peek Review

I received a copy of this sneak peek from Sourcebooks Casablanca through Netgalley. This is my honest review.

Like usual, I went into this sneak peek blind, having not read the synopsis before starting. It seemed pretty clear early on that this was going to be a second-chance romance (which I clearly would have already known if I'd read the synopsis, but the clues start adding up fast without that too). I can already predict how the romance aspect of this story will play out and the odds are that my predictions will be about ninety percent accurate, because the romance genre has rules that more often than not are followed to the T. That's not necessarily a bad thing though. When I want predictable, I know that the romance genre is there to help me out. It just is what it is.

What really has me intrigued by this story at this point in the game is why Finn is so sure that Liv would regret being with him. We spent most of the sneak peek in Liv's head, so I've got a pretty good idea of how the shooting affected her and what her coping mechanisms are. I could even relate to her coping mechanisms because they're the same ones I'd use after a break up. But Finn I do not get yet. It makes sense that the shooting would have affected him more deeply than Liv, because he was actually shot, but we haven't really seen how it has affected him, but the sneak peek has me curious.

So would I buy this book on release day? I can't really say for sure because it's several months away and I just don't know right now if I'll be craving predictable in January. The book will be going on my wishlist though because I really want to know what's up with Finn. - Katie

About the Author

Roni wrote her first romance novel at age fifteen when she discovered writing about boys was way easier than actually talking to them. Since then, her flirting skills haven’t improved, but she likes to think her storytelling ability has. After earning a master’s degree in social work from LSU, she worked in a mental health hospital, counseled birthmothers as an adoption coordinator, and did management recruiting in her PJs. But she always returned to writing.

Though she’ll forever be a New Orleans girl at heart, she now lives in Dallas with her husband and son. If she’s not working on her latest sexy story, you can find her cooking, watching reality television, or picking up another hobby she doesn't need--in other words, procrastinating like a boss. She is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author and a winner of the prestigious RITA Award.
