Review

I received a copy of this book through the Goodreads First Reads giveaway program.

I'm not sure what I was really expecting from this book, but I found myself disappointed anyway. At the very least I know I expected to get some legit recipes from the book, but I didn't. I believe the ingredients listed are legit, but with oven temperatures like "pretty hot" and cooking times listed as "two long naps" there's no way to know how to actually cook these items. Not to mention the fact that the ingredient lists mostly look like

A bowl of cheese
A paw of cilantro
A swipe of salt, pepper

There is just no making use out of these recipes, and I'd really love to have them (although the human friendly versions, but I'm sure I could figure appropriate substitutions for the dog foods listed as ingredients.)

What I did get from this book is a cute, whimsical book as if it were written by a canine chef. Some of the explanations had me giggling and the descriptions and pictures made me want to make these foods (again, the human friendly versions) which made the lack of real recipes that much more disappointing.

Overall I give this book 3 out of 5 stars, because it was cute, funny, and original, but it didn't actually provide any recipes, and I expect recipes from a cookbook. If there had been real, usable recipes, I would actually buy the other books in the series. Without them, I'm not interested. - Katie

About the Author

I learned my trade at The Turntable in San Antonio, feeding hungry train crews, yard workers, and guard dogs. It wasn’t always pretty. It wasn’t always fancy. But somehow I finally caught on: Good, honest food can still be sensational! That was my biggest lesson: that us dogs just want great food … and plenty of it! So… Do you sometimes run out of ideas? Sometimes feel you’re letting the chow-hounds in your family down? Feel like they’re maybe fixin’ to run you out of town on a rail? Fear not. Chef Terry can help you cook up some of the finest tummy-stuffers this side of the Rio Grande. We’ll set some tongues aflame, and have fun doing it! So hop aboard! It’ll be a wild ride! And you know what? You’re gonna get to enjoy cooking for a roomful of hungry roughnecks! And they’re gonna learn to appreciate YOU!
