*Stacking the Shelves* 6 May 2017

(Titles link to Amazon via Amazon Affiliate links)

Stacking The Shelves is a feature/weekly meme created by Tynga’s Reviews in which you share the books you are adding to your shelves, both physical and virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical stores or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

Now, I already have a monthly post I do featuring the books I get in the mail (and it's a lot because I have a serious Goodreads First Reads giveaway addiction), and I'm going to try to start posting my monthly Read-A-Thon posts again too (even if none of the Platypires will be joining me), which will cover the books I receive through Netgalley. But I also go to my thrift store at least once a week, and often leave with a bag full of books. It's such a common occurrence that I'm known as The Book Lady to the frequent volunteers (and I suspect that they've started scheduling their $1 bag of books sales for Thursdays simply because that is the day I usually visit.) So my Stacking the Shelves posts are going to focus on my thrift store hauls, because this is my blog and I do what I want.

On that note, here are the books I picked up this week.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman - I may already own a copy of this book...I know I've seen it at the thrift store several times, and I also see it around on Facebook some, so I feel like I should read it.
The Devils by Fyodor Dostoyevsky - Because who doesn't like reading classic Russian literature.
The Crack Book by Eric Decetis - Because I am basically a child.
The Fairy-Tale Detectives by Michael Buckley - I'm a fan of fairy tales. Making them more female positive is just a bonus.
Railsea by China Mieville - My brother is a fan of Mieville's writing, and I'm very much a follower, especially with my older brother.
Minions: The Junior Novel by Sadie Chesterfield - My kids like the Minions, so I figured this would be a good chapter book for them.
The Immigrant by Manju Kapur - My cover is way prettier than the cover on Amazon, but it was less clear where the woman pictured would be emigrating to.
The Dilbert Principle by Scott Adams - I'm pretending I bought this book for my husband because it's the kind of book my husband might actually read (he mostly doesn't read).
City of Fire by Laurence Yep - This looks like a fun middle grade fantasy.
City of Ice by Laurence Yep - I couldn't not get this book when I got City of Fire
Dragon's Blood by Jane Yolen - I'm pretty sure I read this book when I was younger, so I want to have a copy for my children to read.
Maledicte by Lane Robins - I'm fascinated by the cover of this book. It makes me think of Medieval Venice.
Mrs. Hemingway by Naomi Wood - I really enjoined The Paris Wife by Paula McLain, so I'm curious to see how Ms. Wood tackles the subject of one of Hemingway's wives.
The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau - I'm pretty sure this is the one book from this series that I didn't find a few weeks ago...It's also quite possible it's not the book I was looking for.
The American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin - I like historical fiction, that's pretty much all that was involved in my decision to buy this book.
Caramelo by Sandra Cisneros - I feel like this book appears on those lists of books everyone should read by X time...although I may just feel that way because this author also wrote The House on Mango Street (which I know for a fact is on at least one least that I'm trying to read for some reason or other.)
The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende - At some point, I will actually read something by Isabel Allende, maybe this year for Hispanic Heritage month.
Rebecca's Tale by Sally Beauman - So the hairstyle and dress of the woman on the cover of this book made me think it was set in the Roarin' 20s...It's apparently set in the 50s (although she apparently died in 1931, so I guess it might not be as misleading as it seems).
Tunnels by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams - I really like the cover of this book.  SaveSaveSaveSave
Deeper by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams - I couldn't buy Tunnels and not buy the sequel.
The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan - This copy of the book has been really well loved.
The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult - I'm building quite the Picoult collection...I may already have this book, but I can't remember.
The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima - The cover of this book features an amulet that looks the amulet thing on the cover of the book in the movie The Neverending Story...That's really reason enough to want the book.
The Quest Begins by Erin Hunter - I asked my son if he would read these books. He said they looked interesting. So in the bag they went.
Smoke Mountain by Erin Hunter - This is book 3 of the Seekers series.
The Last Wilderness by Erin Hunter - This is book 4 of the series, so I have half of what Amazon has listed now.
Why Do Crabs Walk Sideways by Anne Claybourne - The other day my daughter told us she wanted to be a zookeeper when she grows up, so when I saw these books I thought they'd be a good start for her.
Why Do Chimps Kiss by Camilla de la Bedoyere - Same reason as the book above.
Splat the Cat Good Night, Sleep Tight by Natalie Engel - Beginner reader book for my kids.
Splat the Cat The Name of the Game by Amy Hsu Lin - Beginner reader for my kids.
Splat the Cat the Rain is a Pain by Amy Hsu Lin - Beginner reader for my kids.
Splat the Cat a Whale of a Tale by Amy Hsu Lin- Beginner reader for my kids.
Splat the Cat Up in the Air at the Fair by Amy Hsu Lin - Beginner reader for my kids.
Splat the Cat with a Bang and a Clang by Amy Hsu Lin - Beginner reader for my kids.
Splat the Cat Blow, Snow, Blow by Amy Hsu Lin - Beginner reader for my kids.
Super Heroes Ready for Action by Victoria Taylor - Marvel beginner reader for my kids.
Friends Help Each Other by Simon Spotlight - Daniel Tiger beginner reader for my kids.
Big Bear, Little Bear by Susan Amerikaner - Disney Brave beginner reader for my kids.
Yoda Bird's Heroes by Ruth Amos - Angry Birds Star Wars beginner reader for my kids.
Rise of the Snakes by Tracey West - Lego Ninjago beginner reader for my kids.
Bizarro Day by Billy Wrecks - Superman beginner reader for my kids.
A Pet for a Princess by Melissa Lagonegro - Aladdin beginner reader for my kids.
Let's Mix by Shari Last - Lego Mixels beginner reader for my kids.
Pirates vs. Ninja by Tracey West - Lego Ninjago beginner reader for my kids.
Return of the First Avenger by Michael Siglain - Avengers beginner reader for my kids.
Fight to the Finish by Bill Scollon - Big Hero 6 beginner reader for my kids.
Mikey's Monster by Hollis James - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle beginner reader for my kids.
Marley and the Runaway Pumpkin by Susan Hill - Beginner reader for my kids.
Cooking with RSVP - I am a firm believer that if you want to get good quality family approved recipes, get yourself a church or community cookbook. I'm getting a rather extensive collection of them at this point.
Treasured Recipes from Red Valley United Methodist Church - This is a very anemic cookbook for a Methodist church (in my experience. I was raised in a Methodist church and my mother has a few different Methodist cookbooks that are all at least twice the size of this one. I still expect to find some amazing recipes within its pages.
Recipes and Remembrances - A cookbook from the First Baptist Church in Killeen, Texas. I'm a little bit disturbed by the fact that the first page I opened to has recipes for fruit cake and prune cake...but not every recipe will be a winner right.

So that is all the books that I picked up at my thrift store this week. It was an expensive week because of the cookbooks and beginner readers, but this haul only cost me $20, only $4 of it was on the books listed before the beginner readers.

What new books did you pick up this week? - Katie
