When meeting with friends, do your discussions usually turn to books? (submitted by Maria @ A Night's Dream of Books)No actually, which is incredibly weird since for the past three years when I was meeting with friends, it was my bookclub, for our monthly meetings, but we almost never talked about the books. It ended up just being like a three hour gab fest with delicious food, but since I mostly needed a reason to get out of the house without the kids in the first place, it was still perfect for me, even if I did wish we'd talk a little bit about each of the books.

I have heard that many "book clubs" don't actually read books in the club, which is kinda sad.
ReplyDeleteI don't know anyone that reads books.
The first book club I was part of, I was so good about reading the books. But with this last book club, I was blogging by that point and for most of the time I was part of the club I was also proofreading...and the proofreading just took precedence over reading the books for bookclub, so I often didn't finish in time, although I could have participated in some discussion.
DeleteWith our club, I think we were all just so busy with other things that while we'd all start the books, finishing them in time was a challenge. But it was also the only night each month that most of us got out of the house without kids, and that's kind of valuable.
I need to find a new bookclub now that we've moved again. - Katie
That's pretty much my experience with book clubs! It's fun though I think I'd like to join a book focused book club.
ReplyDeleteMy first book club was book focused (and I was better at reading the books on time for it too). We'd meet up and discuss the book for like an hour, and then the meeting would turn into a gab fest and we'd stay at the Entertainment Center on base where we had our meetings until closing time at 11 (we only rented the meeting space until 9). I felt it was a nice blend because anyone that needed to get home after we finished discussing the book could leave, but there were always enough of us left to just chat and be adults for a while. - Katie
DeleteLOL on your book club. Same as mine.
ReplyDeleteWe had to gather everyone in to talk about the book too.
Thanks for sharing.
It was nice to get out of the house though, even if we rarely really discussed the book. - Katie
DeleteI need to find a good book club, but this is what I hear about most of them.
ReplyDeleteNot many of my local friends love books or they love books that I don't like.
I honestly think that a large reason why most book clubs end up just being gab fests is because it's the only way the mom's feel okay about taking a night off away from the kids. It's much less guilt inducing to go to book club than it is to just go out with your friends, because book club is intellectual and helps us to be better people. And I say this because it was definitely easier for me to say that I had a book club meeting so I needed my husband home by a certain time than it was for me to say "I would like to go have dinner and drinks with my friends one night each month." And it's just one night I wanted to not be Mom, but without it being for book club, I felt like I couldn't justify it.

I do talk about books with my friends that are fellow book lovers like me, I so wish I could be in a book club it sounds so much fun. Thank you so much for sharing your awesome post and here is my link to my blog hop answer.

Have you tried finding a book club in your area? Or if one doesn't exist, have you considered starting one? - Katie
DeleteYour book club sounds like mine. Lots of talking and great snacks and wine, but not much book talk.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any real life friends that are readers so talking about books doesn't happen.
