I think I did. I remember it being sad, but not AS sad as everyone else made it out to be. I do remember thinking her father was an amazing character. In passing, I have always heard both good and bad things about the book. I wasn't even sure if I should try to read it, but based on what is described here it is a book I would have to approach with caution (for the same reason you discuss). It, however, sounds like a book that may do my soul good to read. Sometimes being uncomfortable is how I best move on from my own experiences, so I am taking that into account and adding this to my TBR as well.
