*Review* The Ghost of Christmas to Come by D.P. Conway

Genre: Holiday
Published: November 20, 2020
Pages: 58

The Ghost of Christmas to Come
A mysterious woman, forgotten by time, lives alone at the edge of a vast hillside cemetery in an old Massachusetts town, trapped in a past she is unable to face.

One day she meets a very special little girl and everything changes.

I received the audiobook version of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.

This story had a bit of a "stay off my lawn" vibe to it from Mattie. She often yells at the children sledding near her house until one day a young girl falls and gets hurt. The girl befriends Mattie and invites her to their Christmas dinner.

There are hints throughout the story that things might not be what they seem. But it's not really clear why things aren't what they seem until the end of the story. I was definitely thinking the cause was something very different than what it turned out to be.

The narration had a pleasant tone, but it didn't try very hard on the different voices. Although I prefer not trying to do voices at all over doing them badly. It kind of reminded me of the narrators on movies like It's a Wonderful Life

Overall I give The Ghost of Christmas to Come 3.9329 out of 5 stars. - Katie

*Review* Wally Takes a Weather Walk by Bree Sunshine Smith

Genre: Children's 2-4 years
Published: September 26, 2023
Pages: 28

Engage with the wonderful world of sunshine, rainbows, thunder, and snow as you learn fun facts with Wally! A first weather book for toddlers.

Wally Takes a Weather Walk teaches toddlers the science behind what they see outside. What is wind? Why are there two rainbows? What makes snowflakes unique? Follow inquisitive Wally as he walks through summer, fall, winter, and spring, picking up facts about the seasons and weather conditions as he interacts with the natural world. Each page is a chance to spark curiosity around the magic waiting just beyond your front door.
•
A RAINBOW ASSORTMENT OF STEM FACTS: What does a toddler love more than asking “Why?” Here, weather questions are answered with scientific facts about each season.
•
A LIGHTNING-SMART AUTHOR: The only weather book for toddlers written by an Emmy Award–winning broadcast meteorologist, Bree Sunshine Smith (real name), accredited by the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society.
SUN, SNOW, AND ALL FIVE SENSES: A whimsical story helps toddlers stay engaged as they use all five senses to leap into a pile of leaves, taste snowflakes on their tongue, and spot a double rainbow!

I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.

This was a rhyming story about a boy who takes a walk through all the seasons (so he probably lives in like Colorado or Kansas, or any of the other states that love to claim that get all four seasons in a single day). While he's walking through various weather events, we learn scientific facts about what leads to them. I definitely learned some new things while reading this.

Because it's educational, I would definitely be more inclined to read this book multiple times (because repetition helps with memory, especially in young children). But I would also probably start to find it boring because repetition kinda just sucks as an adult. The illustrations really helped to show what was going on in the story.

Overall I give Wally Takes a Weather Walk 3.7952 out of 5 stars. - Katie

Bree Sunshine Smith’s middle name was supposed to be Ann, but she was born during a blizzard. When her father saw her for the first time, he said, “She’s the sunshine of my life!” and the rest is history. Bree loves the weather, breaking down complex concepts, and inspiring curiosity in others. She is an Emmy Award–winning broadcast meteorologist accredited by the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society. Her most meaningful accolade to date is winning the “Best Mom Ever” title from her two bold, beautiful boys, Cole and Brooks.

Floss Pottage lives on a narrowboat with her partner in the English countryside. She is inspired by the plants and animals she sees along the canal and the walks she enjoys with her dog in all weathers, observing nature and the changes each season brings.

She doesn’t belong to him… She belongs to the crown.

Prince Tristan Faasa was never destined for the throne. That was always his brother, Michael. The same brother responsible for both Tristan’s tormented childhood and the scar that mars his face. When their father dies, Michael is set to assume the throne, and Tristan is set to steal it. The leader of a secret rebellion, Tristan will stop at nothing to end his brother’s reign. But when Michael’s new betrothed, Lady Sara Beatreaux, arrives, Tristan finds himself in the middle of a new kind of war. The kind that begs the question of what’s more important—the crown or the woman about to wear it.

Sara has one plan. Marry the King and eradicate the Faasa line, even at the risk of her own peril. But she never expects the Scarred Prince. He’s dangerous. Forbidden. And one of the men she’s been sent to kill. But the line between hatred and passion has never seemed so thin, and as secrets come to light, Sara grows unsure of whom she can trust, torn between vengeance and the villain she was never supposed to love.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book through my library. This is my honest review.

I don't normally read books in series in quick succession because I've found I tend to get bored with the series pretty quickly that way. But I was able to borrow the audiobooks for most of this series all at once, and with only 21 days to listen to all of them, I had no choice but to listen to them back to back. I'm not sure if it's because I was listening to audiobooks or because the stories are about different classic stories, but I did not get bored with this series.

This book is a retelling of The Lion King that thankfully deviates from its Hamlet origins. And like the other books in this series, the characters you expect to be good and the characters you expect to be bad don't necessarily pan out. And they're largely not all one of the other either. I'm kind of ashamed to admit how long it took me to pick up on some of the subtle references to the source material in this one, like the ruling family's name. The narration was pleasant to listen to and was dual narrated for the two different POVs.

Overall I give Scarred 4.0965 out of 5 stars. - Katie

A longtime songwriter and an avid reader, Emily McIntire has always had a passion for the written word, and when she's not writing you can find her waiting on her long-lost Hogwarts letter, chasing her crazy toddler, or lost between the pages of a good book.

*Review* There Are Dinosaurs in the Library by Ag Allen

Genre: Children's 4-7 years
Published: September 20, 2023
Pages: 32

There Are Dinosaurs in the Library! is a richly illustrated picture book for children ages 4 to 10. In the book, Mrs. Barker wants to take her third-grade class to the library. When her student Alyssa objects, Mrs. Barker whispers to her, "There are dinosaurs in the library." Boy, are Alyssa and the rest of the class surprised (and a little frightened) when the library transforms into a Jurassic playground.

I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.

This was a fun story about a a school teacher who basically turns the library into Jurassic Park without the death from a book. The dinosaurs from the book come to life and the kids get to play and interact with them, at least as we assume they behaved. It felt very reminiscent of The Magic School Bus series.

This was a fun read, so I would definitely be okay with reading it several times if asked. The illustrations were very colorful, super bold, and just straight up fun.

Overall I give There Are Dinosaurs in the Library 4.8629 out of 5 stars. - Katie

*Top Ten Tuesday* Most Anticipated New Releases 2025/Netgalley Request Roulette

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Joood - Hooligan of Platypire reviews bossed me into doing this, so I guess this is a thing I do now.

This week’s theme is most anticipated books releasing in the first half of 2025, which obviously means I've gotta' play a game of Netgalley Request Roulette (which I just did like three weeks ago for my winter reading list). For any of you not familiar with Netgalley Request Roulette, it's a fun (dangerous) game where I just hop on Netgalley and find ten books I wanna read and request them, just to see how many of them I'll get approved for. I went with the Teens/YA category last time I play NRR, so today I'm diving into the LGBTQIA+ section for all my books. Let's go!

Our Flag Means Death meets The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue in this YA historical fantasy about three queer and trans teens facing down a secret magical society.

Cas has a rule: Don't tell anyone. Not about the nagging gender discomfort, and certainly not about the prophetic visions of untimely deaths. Cas broke this rule only once, and in response, Remy DeWindt ended their friendship forever.

Remy has spent the last eight years researching the secret society that kidnapped her father and the dark magic they practice. She's determined to take them down and bring her father home-no matter what her former friend Cas thinks happened to him.

Finn is desperately in love with Remy, but Remy would never give in to a desire the church deems a sin. But Finn isn't worried about sin. She already committed the worst sin of all when she made a sinister bargain for a deadly price-a price that will soon have to be paid.

When Cas's latest vision sets the three of them on a collision course, they embark on a journey that will force them to confront hidden secrets and deadly magic-and also offer them the chance to find out who they truly are.

Blurb

A princess with a mostly useless magical talent takes on horrible monsters, a dozen identical masked heroes, and a talking lion in a quest to save a kingdom—and herself—in this affectionate satire of the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale The Twelve Huntsmen.

Someone wants to murder Princess Melilot. This is sadly normal.

Melilot is sick of being ordered to go on dangerous quests by her domineering stepmother. Especially since she always winds up needing to be rescued by her more magically talented stepsisters. And now, she's been commanded to marry a king she’s never met.

When hideous spider-wolves attack her on the journey to meet her husband-to-be, she is once again rescued—but this time, by twelve eerily similar-looking masked huntsmen. Soon, she has to contend with near-constant attempts on her life, a talking lion that sets bewildering gender tests, and a king who can't recognize his true love when she puts on a pair of trousers. And all the while, she has to fight her growing attraction to not only one of the huntsmen, but also her fiancĂ©’s extremely attractive sister.

If Melilot can't unravel the mysteries and rescue herself from peril, kingdoms will fall. Worse, she could end up married to someone she doesn’t love.

In this stunning conclusion to the Raven’s Trade duology that began with The Gilded Crown, Hellevir’s bargains with Death to save the ones she loves—including the princess she risked everything to bring back to life—may just lead to the ultimate sacrifice.

Hellevir’s gift to raise the dead once thrust her into the center of a court filled with backstabbing and treason, where she became duty bound to protect Princess Sullivain, the sole heir to the kingdom’s throne and target of many rivals eager for the crown. But the more Hellevir risked to keep Sullivain alive, and the more deeply she fell in love with the princess, the greater the cost became—for Hellevir’s power can only be granted by the strange figure who rules the afterlife, and there is always a price to pay.

Now Hellevir may have risked too much, and Sullivain has become obsessed with consolidating power to vanquish her foes once and for all—by whatever means necessary. Cast out to the fringes of a country on the verge of civil war, Hellevir is torn between protecting her heart or giving what little she has left to finish what she started. Yet, her connection with Sullivain runs deeper than the mortal world, and saving her friends and family might mean risking the woman she is still bound to by soul and blood.

To stop a war, Hellevir must unravel the last of Death’s riddles and decide, once and for all, who deserves to live, what a life is worth, and whether she can pay the price. This explosive finale to the Raven’s Trade duology is sure to satisfy fans of dark fantasy and queer romance.

Now, if you were counting, you'll realize there are 11 books on this list, because one of them released two and a half years ago. I saw the month and day and loved another book by the author, and already had most of the work done for adding it to the list before I realized when it released. I did still have to request it, so I could be denied. You'll also notice that basically every book on this list is fantasy, so that's apparently what I'm feeling right now, probably because I'm also hyped about Onyx Storm releasing at the end of the month (but that's going to be on sooooo many lists this week).

How many of these books do you think I'll get approved for? What books are you most excited about that are releasing in the first half of the year?

If you're stopping by from the linkup, please be sure to drop a link to your post below so I can check out your list. - Katie

*Review* The Maiden and the Unseen by Jeanette Rose and Alexis Rune

Genre: Erotic Romance
Published: September 28, 2022
Pages: 409

God of the Dead. King of the Underworld. The Unseen. The Renowned...

The Glorified Babysitter.

Zeus has finally decreed that the gods may leave Olympus and mingle - anonymously - with the mortals of the present. With zero warning or waiting for him to consent to this arrangement, Hades is placed in charge of not only helping the gods assimilate but also financing them. Unlike the other gods, Hades never withdrew from the mortal world. Instead he spent six months of every year among them, building a fortune befitting one of his many names. As long as the gods follow his strict rules for living among mortals, they have access to a generous monthly stipend. Break the rules, lose the privileges. No allowances. Ever.

Goddess of Spring. The Maiden. The Mistress. The Venerable One...

The Social Media Manager.

For the last two years, Persephone has lived among the mortals, enjoying everything the world she was so sheltered from has to offer. It took years of begging since Zeus's decree to get her mother to allow her to go, and she imparted some strict rules to follow. Rule 1: No fraternizing with other gods. As far as Demeter is aware, Persephone's closest friend is definitely not Helios, the Titan of the Sun. Rule 2 : No men. The mortal she's casually dating doesn't even know the gods exist. Rule 3: Every six months, Demeter comes by for a visit. This one Persephone can't get out of, and if it keeps her mother from investigating Persephone's life, what's the harm?

Destiny. Fate. Fortune. Kismet...

An absolute bitch.

Fate has other ideas for Hades and Persephone, and it does not take lightly to being denied. Struggle and fight all they want. But the threads of destiny have wrapped tightly around them and tugs them tighter and tighter, no matter what the gods themselves have to say about it.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. This is my honest review.

If you've ever wanted to read a modernized version of the Greek myths, this would be a good series for you to check out. The gods are coming down to Earth for the first time in centuries, but modern day life requires a different set-up than in their heyday. And since Hades has never been allowed on Olympus, he's had his hand on the mortal realm through all its changes. And that makes logical sense. Seriously, I love it when the main premise of a story is so easy to accept.

Problems arise when he freezes Persephone's assets, even though, unlike the other gods, she's been working to help support herself the entire time she's been Earthside. But to get that sorted out, she has to find the source of the problem, which means coming in contact with the one god she was absolutely never supposed to meet. While her mom didn't want her interacting with any of the gods, everyone familiar with Greek mythology knows the reason.

Things in this story really heated up, but it got to a point where it seemed like the plot was really thinning under the spice, and only existed to get us from one hookup to the next and the sex kind of took over the story instead of enhancing it.

Overall I give The Maiden and the Unseen 3.1732 out of 5 stars. - Katie

Jeanette Rose got a degree in Classics from Tulane University, then a law degree from George Washington University Law, and yet another degree in National Security Law from Georgetown Law, obviously that wasn't enough, so she decided to write a book as well!
