*Top Ten Tuesday* Christmas Movies Based on Books

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Joood - Hooligan of Platypire reviews bossed me into doing this, so I guess this is a thing I do now.

This week's theme is wintry reads. This is the theme I've been waiting for basically all year and it's pretty much perfect for my current frame of mind. I got Christmas crazy at this time of year in both books and movies. I host a 12 Books of Christmas reading challenge (which I'd love to have you join if you're reading holiday books this year too, just click the title there), and I've been doing 31 Days of Christmas movie reviews since November 24th (because it gives me an excuse to watch at least one cheesy Christmas movie a day). So I've decided to focus my attention of cheesy Christmas movies and the books they're based on. Here we go.

Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe by Melissa de la Cruz
The movie stars Lacey Chabert and Brendan Penny in a gender bend of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. You can read my review of the movie here.

A Shoe Addict's Christmas by Beth Harbison
The movie stars Candace Cameron Bure and Luke Macfarlane and has a bit of a Christmas Carol twist to the plot. You can read my review of the movie here.

The movie A Christmas Story is drawn from some of the stories in this memoir and stars Daniel Stern and Stacey Travis. I don't have a review for this movie, but you're probably already familiar with it.

Dashing Through the Snow by Debbie Macomber
The movie stars Meghan Ory and Andrew W. Walker. This was one of the rare occasions where I felt like the movie was better than the book (but I've come to the conclusion that Macomber is just not an author for me). You can read my comparison review here

Skipping Christmas by John Grisham
This is the basis for the movie, Christmas with the Kranks starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis. This is another one I don't have a review for at this time, but I'm pretty sure it's one that's already on your radar.

The Nine Lives of Christmas by Sheila Roberts
The movie stars Brandon Routh and Kimberley Sustad. I haven't read the book or seen the movie yet, but it's one I'm going to be looking for this holiday season.

Trading Christmas by Debbie Macomber
This movie stars Tom Cavanagh and Faith Ford. I haven't read the book or watched the movie yet, and I'll be skipping the book. Macomber's books make fabulously cheesy movies though, in my experience, so I will be looking for the movie at some point.

Marry Me At Christmas by Susan Mallery
The movie stars Rachel Skarsten and Trevor Donovan. While I haven't seen it yet, I'm planning on trying to catch it on Hallmark this Sunday, so I may have a review for it soon.

The Christmas Cottage by Samantha Chase
The movie stars Merritt Patterson and Steve Lund. I feel like I saw it last year, but I don't know for sure and certainly don't have a review for it because I wasn't reviewing my Christmas movies yet last year. I will be trying to catch it at some point this year, possibly on Friday.

The Christmas Secret by Donna VanLiere
The movie stars Bethany Joy Lenz and John Reardon. I haven't seen the movie as far as I know, but I'm definitely going to be keeping my eyes out for the DVD since it appears it's not airing this year on Hallmark.

So there you have it, ten books that have been turned into (presumably) cheesy Christmas movies, so if you don't quite have the time to read the books this holiday season, you can at least experience the story in movie form. And I know it's not quite the same, but it's still something.

What wintry (or summer reads from you southern hemisphere folks) books made your list this week? - Katie

    1. I blame my mother for my obsession. She tends to keep her tv tuned to Hallmark in December, and in the past few years I've been temporarily homeless in December because of moving more than once, so staying at her house with my kids. There are a few movies I'd definitely recommend checking out this holiday season. Thanks for stopping by. - Katie

  3. I actually did like The nine Lives of Christmas (the book)- don't ask me why I read it haha since I'm not a romance reader, but I was in the mood for a holiday read a few years ago, and quite liked it. I haven't seen the movie version, although I remember thinking the casting didn't look right to me. :)

  5. Christmas with the Kranks is such a fun movie! I've seen it a few times in the past two weeks, and I'm likely going to watch it again before Christmas. XD I didn't know it was based off a book though!! I'm going to have to give it a read.
    Happy Reading!! <3

    1. I haven't watched it yet this year (I've been pretty busy with other responsibilities and am trying to focus my 31 Days of Christmas movie reviews on movies I haven't seen before, or at least that I don't think I've seen before). I'm hoping things will slow down for me some while my kids are off school because I'm going to try to convince them that we should be binge watching all the Christmas things. Thanks for stopping by. - Katie

  9. Wow, this post is perfect for you. I think I've seen the Pride Prejudice and Mistletoe movie and I think The Nine Lives of Christmas is perfect for this time of year. In fact, I may try to find a copy. I'm not big on romance unless it involves a dog (or sometimes cat) but I do tend to read more of it in December. Great list!

    1. December is basically the perfect time of year to be reading romance. Although there are also plenty of holiday reads outside of the romance genre, many that feature dogs and cats I've noticed. Thanks for stopping by. - Katie

  10. I love your topic choice this week! I never knew that some of these were the basis of various Christmas films (like, the Melissa de la Cruz novel or A Shoe Addict's Christmas, although I've been familiar with the books so I'm like ? HOW DID YOU NOT KNOW @ ME.) but now I'm kind of feeling like snuggling up to some of these either in book or film form. Likely both.

    1. I still need to read the books, even for the movies I've already watched, but I need to find the time for that first, and I'm just not sure it'll exist this year. There's always next year though. Thanks for stopping by. - Katie

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's always a bit awkward when it seems like everyone else loves an author that you just can't do. Thanks for stopping by. - Katie
