*Review* The Scythian Trials by Elizabeth Isaacs

Genre: Urban Fantasy
Published: October 23, 2018
Pages: 374

Descendants of the Amazons, the Scythians work alongside prominent governments but answer to no one. Warriors living on the fringe of civilization, they live by one credo: Strength through Equality. Power through Knowledge.

Nya Thalestris is the brightest Scythian of her generation. Strong, capable, ruthless, she is sure to earn a spot in the Trials, a time-honored mating ritual responsible for the evolution of her species.

Abducted by their sworn enemy, the Drahzda, Nya is forever altered and spirals out of control. The Society sends in Jax Nickius. Infamous psychologist and one of the most brutal warriors of their kind, he discovers triggers planted in Nya’s mind. As Nya solidifies her spot in the Trials, Jax develops a plan to help—while pursuing her as a mate. But, Nya’s attraction to Jax is at war with her instinct to never let anyone get too close.

During the Trials, Nya’s repressed memories surface, revealing a new enemy—one from inside the consulate walls—and a traitorous alliance on the horizon that could irrevocably change the course of history.

Since before the Bronze Age, the Society has managed to safeguard humanity from itself … until now.

I was hired to proofread this book. The only aspects of this story that I influenced were the spelling and grammar. If you feel that my connection to the book makes my review untrustworthy, so be it, but this is my honest review.

This story blends together mythology and modern times, with a reality tv twist thrown in for good measure. It imagines what if the legends of the Amazons were true and everyone in the world knew about them again and celebrated their strength. But that's just the surface of the story.

I was most intrigued by the relationship between Nya and Jax, and what led to him being her psychiatrist in the first place. I was almost desperate to find out what had happened in her past to cause her to close herself off and make her so averse to physical contact. When the flashbacks start, I just got even more confused.

Riding underneath everything else, is the growing relationship between Jax and Nya. As Nya's trials get closer, things start to heat up between the two of them. Nya's insecurities about the relationship and Jax's motives made me feel anxious and a little on edge. I was definitely cheering Jax on though.

Overall I give The Scythian Trials 4.9887 stars because I loved pretty much everything about it. - Katie
