*Top Ten Tuesday* Books I'd Mash Together

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Joood - Hooligan of Platypire reviews bossed me into doing this, so I guess this is a thing I do now.

This weeks theme is books I'd mash together. While it's not entirely uncommon for me to read a book and feel like it's the mash-up of other books I'm familiar with, I don't often finish reading a book and think "Man, I'd love to see this book mixed with that book." With that in mind, I will not necessarily be picking books that I have read, but will instead pick ten books and write a synopsis by mashing together the synopses from each book.

Pairing One

Only His by Elizabeth Lowell
It by Stephen King

Escaping the ravages of the Civil War, a gently reared lady must leave behind everything she knows -- and trust her life, and her future to a damn Yankee whose scared of clowns in Derry, Maine.

A team of prize Arabian horses is all that Willow Moran has left, and Ben Hanscomb wants to ride them into the sewers with his five remaining friends from high school. Why he thinks the horses will help them battle the evil lurking there is anyone's guess, but Willow doesn't have much choice at this point. Ben is as fierce and determined as a kitten who has caught sight of a foot under a blanket and Willow has become a fever in his blood...awakening a need so fierce that he would defeat the devil himself to possess her. And he's probably going to have to if he wants to make it out of those sewers alive.

Pairing Two

The Sky is Yours by Chandler Klang Smith
White Sand, Blue Sea by Anita Hughes

Olivia Miller is standing in the burned-out, futuristic city of Empire Island. She has been coming here every April for years to gawk at the pair of dragons that circle the skies. This trip should be particularly exciting because she's with three of her best friends; Duncan Humphrey Ripple V, a spoiled trust-fund kid; Lenore Dahlberg, Duncan's tempestuous fiancee; and Abby, an almost feral homeless girl. And if she's really lucky, her boyfriend Finn will propose.

When Olivia's father shows up unexpectedly, her band of merry misfits is forced to flee their plantation style villa. As they wander toward the scalded heart of the city, they face fire, conspiracy, unholy drugs and dragon worshippers. And Olivia is forced to decide if love is more important than survival.

This is a heartwarming story about romance, adventure, and most importantly,  dragons.

Pairing Three

Omega City by Diana Peterfreund
These Shallow Graves by Jennifer Donnelly

Jo Montfort is beautiful and rich and she doesn't listen to people who say her father's a crackpot. She will soon be graduating from finishing school, and like all the girls in her class, she'll be married off to a wealthy bachelor. But she dreams of becoming a newspaper reporter like the trailblazing Nellie Bly.

When she discovers a missing page from the diary of Cold War era rocket scientist Dr. Aloysius Underberg, she thinks she's found the answer to her prayers. The space themed riddle promises to lead to his greatest invention, and Jo is just the girl to solve it. Enlisting the help of her younger brother, Jo sets off into the ruins of a vast doomsday bunker deep within the earth.

But they aren't alone inside its dark and flooded halls. Down there she meets Eddie -- a young, brash, infuriatingly handsome reporter -- and it becomes clear that he's trying to break the story before Jo does. It's a race against the clock if she wants to bring this story to light and save her father's reputation in the process. But some secrets should really stay buried forever.

Pairing Four

Then Came You by Jill Shalvis
Deadly Design by Debra Dockter

Veterinary intern Emily can't believe she wound up in the small town of Sunshine, Idaho, instead of the Los Angeles clinic she had always imagined. Now she has to put her plans to move to L.A. on hold for a whole year while she fulfills the obligation of her vet school scholarship.

Kyle, a teenage YouTube star, is in a race against time. Conceived in vitro at the Genesis Innovations Laboratory after his parents struggled to have children, he's physically perfect in every way. But there's been a disturbing trend amongst the kids created at the Genesis labs. Every single one of them has died of an apparent heart attack on their eighteenth birthday. Now Kyle has to track down Dr. Mueller who hasn't been heard from in years.

Kyle's search leads him right to Emily's doorstep. Even though he may be jailbait, Emily is determined to help him escape his fate so she can get into his pants once he's legal. Will they be able to find who they're looking for in time?

Pairing Five

Her One and Only by Becky Wade
Population by Elizabeth Stephens

After ten years in the NFL, superstar Gray Fowler is accustomed to obsessive fans. But when Gray starts receiving death threats from the Others, his teams hires an executive protection agency to guard him until the culprit is caught. Dealing with bodyguards 24/7 is a headache, especially when one of them is a young, beautiful woman. How can a female half his size possibly protect him better than he can protect himself.

Violence is Abel's native tongue in a world run by monsters, ravaged by gangs, and fueled by the desperation of hunger. As a former marine, an expert markswoman, and a black belt, Abel is determined to survive at all costs, and she does so by following a personal list of rules. But once she's assigned to Gray's protection detail, her list of rules goes right out the window.

Unused to foreign concepts like friendship and trust, Abel and Gray will have to work together if they want to find the Other who is threatening Gray and save his life.

I realized after I started this post that picking books off my shelves was going to be somewhat difficult as my library is currently halfway packed up and in various stages of disrepair, so my book selection was far more limited than I was hoping. As you may have noticed, I purposely chose books in different genres for each pairing because I felt that would give more interesting results.

So, would you read any of these book mashups? - Katie

    1. I've only read one of them myself...I pulled this off by blending their synopses together, making some small changes to wording when necessary. It resulted in making me interested in moving some of them further of my TBR list though.

    1. I haven't actually read any of Shalvis's books yet, but they strike me as very standard romance fare based on the blurb (which makes it easy to twist by adding elements from another story).

  6. These were really good. This week's topic has been difficult to comment on because I often have only read one half of a pairing, but your synopses are outstanding and I can understand them even if I havne't read the stories.

    1. I agree with the commenting...although if I've at least read one half of a pairing and the blogger added some commentary as to where they saw the story heading with the mash-up, I could usually at least sort of picture it.

I'm glad you liked my synopses. And thanks for stopping by. - Katie
