*Book Blogger Hop* 12 January 2017

We are on to a new week for the Book Blogger Hop hosted by the lovely folks over at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. This weeks questions is:
Have you ever thought of writing a respectful, but angry letter to an author to ask them WHY they killed off one of your favorite characters in a novel? (submitted by Maria @ A Night's Dream of Books)
No, I have not. I honestly can't think of a single book I've read where it wasn't pretty clear why the character died in the first place, and oftentimes I actually find I have more respect for the author for having the guts to kill off a favorite character in the first place. Sure, I still feel upset by the deaths, but I don't feel the need to confront the author about it.

Now that being said, I often harangue authors I occasionally talk to on Facebook about how mean they are to their characters (Suanne Laqueur is a prime example of that!) but in those instances part of the purpose of the comments is promotion for the author. My comments are typically responses to bloggers questions or IABB Confessions, or what have you, so they are made publicly for the world to see. And I have yet to have an author take one of those comments negatively (that I'm aware of at least).

So what about you? Have you ever felt compelled to write an author a letter asking why they killed your favorite character? - Katie

*If you're stopping by from the linkup, please be sure to drop a link to your post below so I can see your answer too. It will take me a few days to get to you probably because I'm currently traveling to see my in-laws, but I will return comments when I have some time.*

  1. You must be like me and write your posts ahead of time. :)

I think this question was moved to another date. It is a very good question.

In answer to your question...I have not.

    Have a great weekend.

    1. I'm usually not super far ahead...but with being in the middle of a long trans-Atlantic move and having pre-built these posts at the beginning of December before my desktop computer was packed up for at least two months (or until we find and buy a house, whichever comes last), I was ahead with the questions...and did not notice the change before posting. I'm glad to see that I'm probably not just going crazy though. :) - Katie

  2. Oh my gosh, I can't wait to get to this question. I don't want to ask the author (because I don't always want to know the answer lol), but there are many times I have gotten angry and thrown books or sobbed until I was hiccuping because one of my favorite characters was (unjustly) killed off. Great answer :)

  3. I haven't and don't feel I have a right to. It's their story, their vision and even if I don't like it, I have to respect it... And if I'm going to rant, I'll rant on my blog not direct to the author, for venting frustration over the death of a character should never amount to a personal attack and, to me, if you're delivering a rant to their inbox it's personal.
