*Stacking the Shelves* 2 September 2017

(Titles link to Amazon via Amazon Affiliate links)

Stacking The Shelves is a feature/weekly meme created by Tynga’s Reviews in which you share the books you are adding to your shelves, both physical and virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical stores or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

Now, I already have a monthly post I do featuring the books I get in the mail (and it's a lot because I have a serious Goodreads First Reads giveaway addiction), and I'm going to try to start posting my monthly Read-A-Thon posts again too (even if none of the Platypires will be joining me), which will cover the books I receive through Netgalley. But I also go to my thrift store at least once a week, and often leave with a bag full of books. It's such a common occurrence that I'm known as The Book Lady to the frequent volunteers (and I suspect that they've started scheduling their $1 bag of books sales for Thursdays simply because that is the day I usually visit.) So my Stacking the Shelves posts are going to focus on my thrift store hauls, because this is my blog and I do what I want.

On that note, here are the books I picked up this week.

Snuff by Chuck Palahniuk - For ages I've been meaning to read some of Palahniuk's work. I'm pretty sure I'm getting close to owning everything he's published so far even. Maybe I'll get around to reading some of it soon.
Pegasus in Flight by Anne McCaffrey - I'm a huge Anne McCaffrey fan and have been working on building up my own McCaffrey collection.
Mustang, Wild Spirit of the West by Marguerite Henry - I mentioned recently that I went through a horse phase when I was a kid. I'm not sure if I read this book, but I know I read a lot of books by Ms. Henry.
100 Cupboards by N.D. Wilson - I got book three in this series a few weeks ago. I was pretty happy to find book one this week. Now I just need two.
The Stripping of the Altars by Eamon Duffy - This book is about the history of religion in England between 1400 and 1580, which if I remember right is around the time of the Reformation. It's a period in religious history that fascinates me.
Disney Princess by Jennifer Liberts Weinberg - My daughter asked for this book. She has a thing for Disney Princesses.
Burnt Shadows by Kamila Shamsie - This book begins in Nagasaki the day the atomic bomb was dropped. I think it will be an interesting perspective to read.
Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix - This seems to be a middle grade dystopian novel. I'll probably read it before my kids do simply because I like dystopian books.
Happy Birthday, Thomas! by Rev. W. Awdry - This is a Thomas the Train beginning reader.
The Dancing Plague by John Waller - This story sounds rather fantastical, and it's apparently true. My copy is also in pristine condition.
Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss - This is a book about punctuation, and while I'm pretty familiar with punctuation rules, I've heard so much about this book that I want to read it.
Dreams of Joy by Lisa See - This is apparently a sequel to Shanghai Girls (which I think I also own) so I reckon I should read that first.
Without You, There Is No Us by Suki Kim - This is a memoir about teaching the sons of North Korea's elite. It should be really interesting.
Sea Star: Orphan of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry - I know I read this book when I was younger. I just hope one of my children will want to read it as well.
Brighty of the Grand Canyon by Marguerite Henry - I think I read this book when I was younger as well, even though it's about a burro, not a horse, it still fell in my horse phase because it was by Ms. Henry.
Demonic by Ann Coulter - This is one of those books that I buy in case I find myself wanting to get angry (you know, like in case I need to turn myself into The Hulk to defend New York City or something). Beyond that, it's an attempt to at least try to understand where the other side is coming from.
The Scary States of America by Michael Teitelbaum - I like scary stories.
The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs - The book has an interesting title.
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski - I had no idea what the book was about when I stuck it in my basket, but the cover makes me think of home (I'm from the middle of nowhere, Kansas).
The Soldier's Wife by Margaret Leroy - This book is set during the WWII era in Guernsey, which is apparently an island between France and England (I'm not good with geography).

So that's all the books I picked up this week. This haul cost me $1.50 because books were back up to full price (although the price of books seems to have changed since the thrift store came under new management), but the thrift store was having a 50% off EVERYTHING sale today. It's a smaller haul for $1.50 than I had last week, but still an amazing deal.

What books have you added to your shelves this week? - Katie

    1. I might find time to read them all eventually. My book buying will almost certainly slow down when move back stateside and I lose access to the amazing base thrift store. - Katie

  3. Jeez, only $1.50... that's amazing. Recently my mom and I went to a thrift store to look for children's books (for ages 4-8) and we got a bunch for $1.25! It was awesome. I hope you enjoy all of your new books!

  5. If it were true that the sales people at the thrift store set up the $1 a bag sale on Thursdays that would be pretty awesome. Otherwise, it's a really neat coincidence! They will probably never tell you the truth though. Haha

You got some great ones! Including a few that are on my TBR pile (some longer than I care to admit). Burnt Shadows for one. I really enjoyed Lynne Truss's book. I hope you enjoy your new books! Have a great week!
